Why Bringing Up Children is a Joint Effort

A CHILD IS MORE ROUNDED IF IT LEARNS FROM LOTS OF DIFFERENT SOURCES
Children have so much to learn as they grow up and can ask many questions as a result. In an ideal world children have these questions answered and begin to learn about the world that they live in and how to live in it. For example, they hopefully learn about how to interact with people and how to count.
In addition, in an ideal world, they not only learn these lessons but they also learn them from a variety of people. This is because there is not always one correct answer to a question or one way to approach teaching a child. How someone perceives the world, what they see as important and how they do things, will be shaped by their personalities and pasts.

For instance:

  • Some will care deeply about animals.
  • Some will be intrigued by different music or literature.
  • Some will be able to offer advice on how to cope with illness or death of a loved one as they have experienced it.
  • Some will have struggled with maths or science and have learnt a different way of learning the subject.

Each and every person can offer something different to teach a child or inspire a child. As a result, the more people a child interacts with and learns from, the more they will learn. They will learn many exciting and interesting things but also they will learn different ways of seeing one thing. If each person has a different view on a subject, the child will be shown each of these and have a rounded view from which to then form their own view. This is important because the child then thinks for themselves and grows as a person.

PARENTS ARE AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF THIS INFORMATION
Parents are an important source of this information for their children. They can provide as a starting point two sources of information. Their wider family should also be encouraged to join in and teach the children of the family. For both parents to be able to pass on their knowledge and life experiences in order to educate their child or children, they need to be around and not at work for very long hours.

WOMEN’S EXPERIENCES ARE IMPORTANT TOO
Women have equally important experiences that their child would benefit from learning. Women should not have to work longer hours to earn the same as men or work longer hours regardless. If they do have to do this, then this places women at a disadvantage to men. One of these disadvantages is that it takes women away from their children. They need to be around when their children are awake to be able to help them learn. If a mother is always having to be at work for very long shifts, they will miss the opportunity to share their knowledge with their children. This leaves the child at a disadvantage. The child will not learn from the lessons of their mother and will have one less angle to their knowledge. The child may end up being less of a rounded person.
