LEAVING THE NEST: WHAT REMAINS WHEN EVERYTHING CHANGES

Introduction

We all eventually leave the nest; that is no secret to anyone. When we are younger, we are eager to leap out of it. We envy those who spread their wings before us, wondering what it will feel like when our turn finally comes. Yet people constantly tell us to be patient, that the day will come sooner or later, and that we will miss these long days spent in the family home. We shrug it off, and when our moment finally arrives, we fly away without looking back, eager to discover the world through our own eyes at last.

What We Carry in Our Suitcases

And so begins our solo journey, with an itinerary we have spent years planning in our minds. At last! Freedom is ours, control over our own lives is ours, and the world seems ready to welcome us with open arms. Yet, as we settle into our new cocoon, daily life sometimes brings us back to cherished memories of our former home. It may be the smell of coffee reminding us of mornings with our parents, or the instinctive need to call home before making an important decision. And then we wonder: do we truly begin a new life when we leave the nest?

The Silent Gap

Then one day, on a whim, we decide to return. To revisit the place that sheltered our childhood, “to recharge,” as we say. We are welcomed like royalty. As with every first experience, this new reality feels different. Is it still home? In the end, are we truly at home, or simply at our parents’ house? We look around, and every second something catches our attention: a new tablecloth that was not there before we left, new curtains. And suddenly, everything feels unfamiliar. Suddenly, we rediscover the house that once held all our memories.

Family, Still There

After the hugs and embraces, one thing becomes clear: the members of the family are still the same. The loving and quietly proud look in their eyes remains unchanged. They still listen with the same attention and care. Sometimes, to spoil us, they prepare our favorite meal and proudly place it before us. And we smile, not only because we missed it, but because we have found that warmth again, the warmth of home. And deep down, we begin to wonder what “home” truly means.

Conclusion

Because home is not simply a piece of furniture that remains where we left it. It is not just a drawing we made as children and hung on the wall, reminding us of the innocence and naïveté of who we once were. Home is not merely a place we eventually leave behind. Home is everything that shapes us: our values, our principles, our fears, our habits, our traditions. Home is where our heart truly feels at peace.
