The Social, Political and Economic Impacts of Quality Distance Education in Mozambique

Introduction

Distance learning, also known as online or remote education, is a teaching approach in which teachers and students communicate virtually rather than in person. This method delivers education and course materials via video conferencing, the internet, and other electronic channels. Did certain higher education institutions in Mozambique use it appropriately to improve society as a whole or as a means of conducting business to make money?

Online Education in Mozambique

The goal of distance education is to reduce the time and distance barrier between students and lecturers. However, the way it is currently run by other institutions is casting doubt on the calibre of education; it appears that titles are now being given to unreliable individuals. To avoid endangering society by simply giving titles or certificates to incompetent individuals, the government and online higher education institutions must modify their policies and procedures. Examples of measures include AI-powered proctoring, which prevents new cheating strategies in online tests and ensures the security and legitimacy of assessments and online exams. At the very least, physical tests or exams on school campuses are invigilated as a means of demonstrating that this is their actual student and that they possess the knowledge of the material being examined. Because most students enrolled in online programs pay others to complete their homework, research, and even dissertations, schools typically assess and evaluate other applicants rather than their own. Institutions of higher learning should cultivate an emphasis on delivery over profit.

Demerits

Poor social, political, and economic delivery within society is a direct result of low educational quality. This has a detrimental effect in that incompetent people get appointed to a post but are unable to perform because they lack the necessary academic training. It can be challenging to recognize competent graduates when they are released into the workforce by educational institutions. For instance, students who receive traditional classroom teaching may go unnoticed since their certificates are identical. Even though there are honest students who take advantage of the chance to learn by studying diligently online, those who study online cheating can achieve higher average grades than those who study in traditional classroom settings. Some of them are now motivated more by obtaining a title rather than by gaining knowledge, and they utilize financial leverage to make others study for them. As a result of that, the country will not advance.

Conclusion

The government must establish online learning regulations to foster a favourable social, political, and economic climate in Mozambique with the help of the country’s real academic community. The employment process must be competent and based on merit. Take the necessary steps to prevent online cheating to foster and protect academic integrity.
