The youth have started one small thing, which has turned into something massive and global. Actions that have proven to contribute to climate change including, raising awareness of the pressing issues that are a problem in the community; social media, blogs, and community events can be ways to do that. Secondly, engage in policy advocacy by pushing for laws that reduce carbon emissions, protect forests, etc. Third, is create innovative, sustainable and eco-friendly technologies that help the environment. The classic slogan of “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle” – can never go out of style. Make personal lifestyle changes such as using eco-friendly products, supporting ethical brands, etc. Lastly, educating and inspiring others with school programs and workshops that will teach people the importance of sustainability.
Known Examples of Youth in Climate Change Activism
One of the most famous of these people is Greta Thunberg. What started out as a simple climate change picket at school, has turned into her attending various UN Climate Change conferences where she continues to advocate for climate change and sustainable practices. Then there is Leah Namugerwa who is a youth climate activist, known for leading tree-planting campaigns and has started a petition to ban plastic bags in Uganda. Nkosilathi Nyathi, at 17-year-old, is a UNICEF climate change activist from Zimbabwe who speaks about how climate change has affected him, and how he wants to change that. It is these people that the earth really needs. They are the ones setting an example for the young and old.
