Introduction
Clothing fashion refers to the popular style of dressing at a given time. It is a socio-cultural phenomenon that evolves over time and is influenced by cultural, social, economic and other factors. In Côte d’Ivoire, it is diverse and reflects one of the country’s cultural riches. In this manuscript, we examine some aspects of this Ivorian cultural heritage.
Different types of clothing
In Côte d’Ivoire, there are two different types of clothing: traditional and modern.
Traditional modes of dress are cultural costumes that vary according to ethnicity and region. Modern fashions, on the other hand, are influenced by international trends and can be found in both rural and urban areas. These are contemporary garments made in modern European styles, often combining traditional and modern elements.
A few outfits
Different ethnic groups and regions wear different types of clothing. In the traditional category is the boubou, generally worn by people from the north. It’s a long, loose-fitting tunic, often embroidered. Next comes the kaba, a popular garment consisting of a full top and skirt, usually worn by women in the south, east, west and center. Then there are the pagnes, which are large, colorful pieces of woven fabric worn with accessories by men in the southern, eastern, western and central regions. These are often worn for cultural events such as dowries, weddings, the enthronement of chiefs and so on.
Modern outfits are Western-style dresses, skirts, blouses and pants made to measure from colorful loincloths and printed fabrics. These types of clothing vary according to the professional guild. We can cite outfits for policemen, students, doctors, etc. As these styles may no longer be worn tomorrow, they are considered ephemeral.
On the whole, Ivorian fashion is characterized by diversity and creativity. Its blend of tradition and modernity enables it to adapt to contemporary trends.
Economic and socio-cultural importance
Economically, fashion apparel is an industry that encompasses the design, production, distribution and marketing of clothing and accessories. It is a major source of revenue and employment in the country.
In socio-cultural terms, fashion is a means of expressing cultural, social and personal identity, and reflects social evolution and changing mentalities. Clothing choices also reflect values, traditions and individual or collective influences.
Conclusion
Ivorian fashion is dynamic, blending tradition and modernity. More than just a commercial industry, it is rooted in culture, society and individual identity. Its economic and cultural impact is far-reaching, shaping trends and influencing the way people perceive themselves and interact with the world around them.
