THE VALUE OF MENTORSHIP IN THE WORKPLACE

INTRODUCTION 

Although mentorship provides undisputed benefits for the mentee and mentor, research indicates that mentorship benefits the organization when it is implemented in workplaces hence top companies invest in mentorship programs. In this article, I share three top reasons why having mentorship programs in the workplace is important and beneficial. 

WHY CREATE MENTORSHIP IN THE WORKPLACE?

Organisations are always looking for ways to nurture and retain their best people. Fortunately for them, most employees are similarly looking for ways to get fulfilment and satisfaction out of their work, making this a key area for businesses to cultivate. This is where workplace mentoring, sometimes known as business mentoring, comes in. Business mentoring can help employers retain and develop their employees by creating a better working culture where employees can learn and grow. In this article, reviews the need for mentorship in the workplace. 

 

IT PROMOTES CAREER SKILLS DEVELOPMENT: In workplaces, mentorship programs promote competency and skill development for both mentor and the mentee. The mentor shares their knowledge with the learner and assists them with reaching their goals; in return, the mentor gains a new perspective and sharpens their leadership skills. The company benefits by having competent employees in their field of work at different levels with increased productivity due to shared knowledge. 

 

STRENGTHEN A COMPANY CULTURE: When a company invests in mentorship programs, it commends the impression that it cares for the development of its employees and that it can promote the company culture. Mentorship programs promote good working relations between employees and their leaders and provide proper modelling of the company’s values, goals, and mission. This potentially positively affects their productivity and engagement and increases company retention. These positive outcomes strengthen the company.

 

INCREASES EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT: According to Forbes, employee engagement is defined as how the employee is emotionally invested and committed to the goals and success of the organization.  Mentorship programs provide an opportunity for a close working relationship between employees, colleagues, and their bosses. This creates a space of trust and allows employees to feel valuable. The employee works not only to get paid but becomes committed to the success of the company because of the positive work environment created for them. 

 

CONCLUSION
