Social Defeat in the Workplace in Madagascar

Introduction

Social defeat is a situation of rivalry in which a person seeks to prove their worth, abilities, or superiority compared to others. In the workplace, it occurs when employees compare themselves with one another in order to obtain a promotion, a better salary, or recognition from their superiors. It therefore reflects not only a person’s failure, but also the tendency to view the success of others as a threat. This reality also exists in the workplace in Madagascar.

Reasons for Social Defeat at Work

In the workplace, workers are competent and capable. However, it can sometimes be difficult for some people to accept the skills and success of others. This is how social defeat emerges in the professional environment. For many people, working primarily means earning money to live or survive. Financial needs become a priority, while personal fulfilment, recognition, and cooperation take a secondary place. In order to obtain a promotion or keep their jobs, workers seek to give their best. However, not everyone has the same motivations or working conditions. Some benefit from a satisfactory salary, while others work under difficult conditions and receive low wages. These differences can lead to jealousy, mistrust, and competition among colleagues.

Impact of Social Defeat in the Professional World

Because of financial, human, or material motivations, some workers may sometimes go as far as sacrificing their dignity to prove that they are better or more capable than others. This situation can lead to a loss of self-confidence, a decrease in self-esteem, as well as jealousy and conflicts. The main purpose of work is then forgotten. Hatred, mockery, and misunderstanding gradually emerge, turning work into a means of revenge rather than a commitment to achieving the objectives of the employer, company, or institution.

Social Defeat as a Source of Collective Intelligence

Social defeat can nevertheless become a driver of development. When it pushes a person to improve their skills, learn from others, and overcome their limitations, it produces a positive effect. Competition then becomes healthy because it promotes progress without seeking to undermine colleagues. To achieve this, it is necessary to develop collective intelligence, that is, to bring together the skills, knowledge, and experiences of workers. Behavioral skills (soft skills), technical skills (hard skills), and transferable skills are different but complementary. Collective intelligence therefore makes it possible to transform individual differences into a common strength serving a shared objective.

Conclusion

Social defeat exists in the workplace in Madagascar because of competition, financial needs, and the search for recognition. When it manifests itself through disparagement and jealousy, it becomes a factor of stagnation. However, when it encourages effort, learning, and self-improvement, it can become a driver of development.
