How did it all start?
The madness, the deception, the false hope
When did we stop taking accountability?
It’s like seeing a rotten apple
In a pile of good apples
And allowing it to go bad
Influencing the others negatively
We have become a society of “Mehs”
People who just ignore and move on
Why is that?
Fear? Threats? Lack of safety?
It differs
But the truth remains the same
“We don’t want to end up like them.”, they would say
Who is “them”?
“Them” are those speaking out
Those who are telling the truth
Those who want to expose those who are bad
But unfortunately, they had to risk their lives
In order for the truth to come out
The whistle-blowers, community members
Noble officials who won’t stand for bad
Oh, woe is their loved ones
Who will miss them dearly.
Their rights became wrong
And those who stopped them, became wrong.
How did this happen? What can be done?
How to turn wrongs into wrongs again
And to make the rights more honourable
There are lots of ways
Community forums, accountability reports
Arrests, harsher punishments
Those are but some of the ways…
… but there are many others
We need to hold those who do bad accountable
To fight for what is right
To stand up for truth and justice
To not be afraid of blowing the whistle
Society needs people like those
So that law and order is there and fairness is achieved.
Poem Description
This poem is about how society has kind of “accepted” the wrongs for what it is and is just accepting them. This piece figuratively explains “where did society go wrong” in allowing this to happen, the true effects of wrongs in society, and also to the people who tried to call them out (whistle-blowers, officials, law enforcement, etc.). In the poem’s essence, it is about bringing accountability forward, to prosecute the criminals and to bring in law, trust, and justice back into communities. So that bad things stay wrong, and the good things stay right.
