Game On, Life is Ready: Building Champions for Life

Introduction

Sport is often associated with physical fitness and winning trophies; however, it also provides adolescents with valuable life skills that support holistic development. Sporting activities offer one of the most effective platforms for adolescents to learn and practice real-life skills. It is essential for young athletes to thrive both on and off the pitch and integrating life-skills training into sporting activities prepares them for life beyond sports. An effective life-skills programme for adolescents should address three key questions: “Who am I? What do I need? What should I do?”

Looking Inside

This segment focuses on self-awareness and seeks to explore and answer the question, “Who am I?” It is important for adolescents to understand themselves at their current developmental stage, both mentally and emotionally. Key areas addressed include personality and temperament, as well as character and values formation. Topics covered in this stage include self-awareness, goal-setting and boundary-setting, and child rights and responsibilities.

Building Outside

This section exposes adolescents to knowledge and skills related to leadership, peer education and support, and communication, addressing the question, “What do I need?” Adolescents should be empowered and given opportunities to lead within their immediate environment, support one another, and express themselves effectively. The topics covered in this stage include leadership skills, peer education and support skills, and communication skills.

Reaching Wide

This section seeks to equip adolescents with the skills needed to thrive in the 21st-century world. With digital advancements and technological revolutions becoming an integral part of everyday life, adolescents must be prepared to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. They should also be inspired and given opportunities to engage with community challenges, identify local issues, and collaborate to develop solutions. Additionally, adolescents will be introduced to sports-related careers, addressing the question, “What should I do?” Exposure to careers in the rapidly growing sports industry is particularly important, as very few people currently make a living from sports in Africa despite the abundant opportunities available. Through interactions with sports legends and professionals, adolescents will learn about careers as professional athletes, coaches, sports doctors, psychologists, nutritionists, fitness trainers, sports journalists, sports lawyers, sports administrators, sports promoters, and other sports-related professions. Topics in this section include Internet safety, community service, and sports career exploration.

Conclusion

There is a believe that with a deliberate and intentional program like this, adolescents will not only develop sporting skills, have fun, and stay fit and healthy, but also acquire additional life skills that will help them become well-adjusted individuals and productive citizens in their communities, nations, and the world at large. Such a holistic and integrated approach will undoubtedly unlock the potential of every adolescent athlete. Focusing on life skills transforms sports into more than just competition, while winning a game feels good, learning how to navigate life successfully feels even better.
