A Shift to Gas, Solar, and Generators for many South Africans

Introduction

Despite the claim made by Eskom (South Africa’s main public energy provider) of 200 days without load-shedding – scheduled power cuts – earlier this year, South Africa’s townships continue to experience power outages. This is because of illegal connections, cable theft and severely overloaded distribution systems. Although the national power supply remains stable, communities in Gauteng, Western Cape and Free State continue to face unannounced blackouts. In these areas, the distribution network is so fragile that even the slightest rain leads to a technical fault, leaving many households in the dark for days. These unpredicted power cuts have led people to turn to alternative renewable sources of power such as gas stoves, solar panels and generators.

Gas Stoves

For many township families, gas stoves have become a practical solution to the constant power cuts. They offer a reliable source of energy for cooking, allowing them to prepare meals during blackouts. They are cost-efficient: gas stoves and cylinders have lower operating costs compared to electric stoves, especially in areas where electricity prices are high. They’re also reliable as they keep working during power outages, as they do not rely on electricity. If the gas cylinder is filled, it can last for weeks or even months, depending on its size and how often it is used.

Solar Panels

The use of solar energy by households and businesses is rapidly growing, indicating that people are using it to adjust to ongoing electricity problems. Between March 2022 and June 2023, rooftop solar capacity increased by 349%, showing that more people are being pushed to use solar by the power crisis. Solar energy helps secure energy independence by reducing dependence on the unreliable energy grid. Energy derived from the sun remains available regardless of power cuts or local grid failures. As a renewable resource, solar energy is also limitless, contributing therefore to a reduction in carbon emissions and the use of fossil fuels.

Generators

Generators work as an instant backup solution capable of powering entire household systems and businesses that smaller backup units cannot handle. Generators offer a flexible solution to the crisis, as users can choose generator sizes ranging from small units that can power lights and TVs to large ones that automatically restore full power within seconds of an outage.

Conclusion

The load-shedding and local power crisis has led people to seek out alternative sources of energy. This article has discussed three of the most used solutions – the use of gas stoves for cooking, solar panels for long-term independence and generators for powering heavier appliances.
