The Abusive Use of Pesticides in Burkina Faso

Introduction

Most farmers use pesticides to ensure good harvests. However, this usage often becomes excessive and carries harmful effects. So, what causes the increased use of pesticides? What are the consequences of such use? And what perspectives can be considered to mitigate these effects? First, we will highlight the reasons behind this usage, then examine its implications. Finally, we will propose effective measures to curb the phenomenon.

Reasons for the Abusive Use of Pesticides

Several factors explain pesticide use. One of the most common is the desire to maximize agricultural yields by quickly eliminating obstacles such as weeds that hinder crop growth. Additionally, the lack of adequate agricultural equipment (plowing machines), despite government efforts, contributes to this overuse. Finally, a lack of awareness about the harmful effects of pesticides leads many farmers to consider these toxic products as “miracle solutions”.

The Urgency to Put an End to It

Pesticides have serious impacts on human and animal health. Indeed, humans and animals are weakened by these products, reducing life expectancy. Another disastrous consequence is the accelerated degradation of farmland, as many pesticides are not officially approved and are often introduced illegally. The disappearance of numerous species is also a direct result of this usage.

Solutions to Mitigate the Effects of Pesticides

Given the numerous harmful effects of pesticides, promoting innovative and organic farming is essential. Several organizations work toward this goal. For instance, AGROPAK-Burkina, based in Koudougou, aims to change the situation. Stricter monitoring of pesticides to remove unapproved products from the market is also necessary. Finally, the continued mechanization of agriculture, along with farmer training and awareness programs, must persist to effectively end the abusive use of pesticides.

Conclusion

The use of pesticides, especially unapproved ones, is widespread in Burkina Faso. The reasons for such usage are multiple, but the harmful effects are equally devastating. It is therefore urgent to take strong measures to put an end to this problem.
