Does Age Push Us Away? The Silent Struggle of Elderly People

Introduction

High quality of social connections is important to our mental and physical health, the WHO suggested that social isolation and loneliness are widespread, older people experiencing loneliness are around 11.8% worldwide. So, when they say getting older means growing apart, a believe that’s not due to some kind of experience or related issues with being old but is simple as the circle that you’ve been surrounded by this whole life is slowly getting smaller. Slowly starting to lose the people you’ve been with more than a couple of decades, relationships from all meanings slowly disappear or ends, so it’s harder to be open to new ones. Aging affects us emotionally more than physically, and this so-called social disconnection happens to be just a part of a normal process called life.

Feeling Fragile

They said aging is a disability, getting older means losing most the abilities and the qualities that younger ones have, and this part of losing the independence make them unable to indulge in daily activities younger ones usually do. Making them prone to staying in a one place and search for comfort leading to finally lose interest in the communication process.

A Culture of Disrespect

So, ageism is something that is determined to happen if you lived longer, nowadays some stereotypes are famous amongst the younger generations about the older ones, such as being old means you are behind, not open enough to understand the younger thoughts and how the world is evolving, and so far, the technology doesn’t make it easier even, starting by learning how to use them till the must to keep up with their evolution.

Wiser But Quitter!

As we grow older, we tend to feel irrelevant. Not because we have nothing to say, but because life gets you to question things, to doubt, to reflect. It teaches you that nothing is stable, different waves carrying different lessons.  People assume we lack knowledge, but really, we’ve just seen enough to know things aren’t always simple. Once we lose a friend, a family member, a neighbour this is where the lack of real communication — and slowly, we go quiet. But this silence isn’t weakness. It’s the price of experience.

Solutions

How can we, as a society, help the elderly feel a true sense of belonging? In some parts of the world, government departments and community organizations are working to improve the lives of older adults. These efforts focus on encouraging their involvement through specific activities and programs tailored to their needs and interests. Local communities play a key role by offering spaces where older people can connect, participate, and contribute. This is what life should be about — inclusion, connection, and ensuring that every generation feels valued.

Conclusion

Communities must come together to ensure that everyone feels seen, heard, and valued — especially as they age. Growing older is not a flaw; it’s a natural and inevitable part of life. With age comes experience, and with experience, often comes silence. But that silence holds wisdom. Instead of pushing older voices aside and cornering them, we should make space for them — not just out of respect, but because they matter. Everyone deserves to belong.
