Women’s Empowerment: An Ambivalence in Contemporary Marriage?

Introduction

The evolution of contemporary marital dynamics reveals a troubling reality: out of one hundred marriages, only about thirty last beyond five years. This unsettling fact contrasts sharply with the stability that characterized marriages of the past. Such a phenomenon prompts deep reflection: is it the intrinsic complexity of human relationships that prevents lasting unions, or is it the emancipated woman—now discovering a new world where she seeks to fulfil her long-suppressed dreams—who disrupts the traditional balance of marriage? Women’s empowerment thus appears ambivalent, seen both as a key driver of social, economic, and cultural well-being, and paradoxically, as a source of tension in today’s households.

Contextualizing Women’s Empowerment

Women’s empowerment refers to the process through which women gain social, economic, educational, and cultural autonomy and freedom. This process, fundamentally positive, undeniably contributes to individual fulfillment. However, this progress sometimes gives rise to a desire for personal achievement independent of marital ties. Marriage—once viewed as a cornerstone of adult life—is now often perceived as an obstacle to self-development. Financial independence, freedom, and equality have become, for some women lacking proper preparation, tools to prove they can lead fulfilled lives without a spouse.

Women’s Empowerment: A Misunderstood Ideal

The key drivers of women’s empowerment include education, economic independence, and the fight against major social challenges such as early marriage and gender pay inequality. Yet, some young women, in light of an empowerment that is not well-guided, claim total autonomy by rejecting the need for a husband, sometimes leading to marital breakdowns. Meanwhile, some men perceive an accomplished woman as a threat or an authority figure rather than a partner. Nevertheless, many couples demonstrate that mutual independence can coexist harmoniously, with both partners building a shared and balanced future.

What Empowerment Should Truly Represent

Ideally, empowerment should not remove women from the marital framework but rather strengthen their ability to assert themselves within it. A woman’s financial success should not stand in opposition to marital success; instead, it should serve as a lever for mutual growth and fulfillment. When properly understood and supported, empowerment becomes a valuable asset that enriches relationships and fosters shared achievement.

Conclusion

Open-mindedness and economic stability should never extinguish mutual respect, for empowerment is not meant to defy norms but to elevate individuals. It is crucial to remember that women’s empowerment was never designed to replace the husband’s role as head of the family but rather to allow women, as mothers and partners, to flourish fully—a condition essential to family and community well-being.
