THE PRESIDENTIAL INITIATIVE “FASO MEBO”: BUILDING BURKINA FASO TOGETHER

Introduction

A landlocked country in West Africa, Burkina Faso faces immense challenges, among which is the aspiration for development. This requires bold and innovative initiatives. Despite security challenges, the population remains resilient and supports government authorities in their policies to restore territorial integrity and foster development. It is with the aim of capitalizing on this resilience that the presidential initiative “Faso Mêbo” was born. How does it take shape? To explain, we will provide an overview of this initiative as well as its main areas of focus.

Overview of the Presidential Initiative “Faso Mêbo”

Adopted by decree in the Council of Ministers on October 16, 2024, Faso Mêbo serves as a call for national solidarity toward a common cause: development. “Faso Mêbo” comes from a combination of words in Burkina Faso’s national languages—Mòoré and Dioula—and literally means “Build the Country.” To achieve this, contributions from Burkinabè citizens—whether in kind, in cash, or through volunteer work—are highly encouraged. For nearly a year, the population has responded positively to this call.

Road Construction

One of the key components of “Faso Mêbo” is the construction of road infrastructure. Indeed, out of a road network of 15,000 km, only 4,000 km are paved, which hampers commercial circulation and population mobility. This project will ensure the availability of essential materials such as cement, granite, sand, and more. Consequently, the opening up of towns and rural areas through road brigades established for this purpose can be achieved. The goal is to pave between 3,000 and 5,000 km of roads per year.

Urban Planning and Beautification

Urbanization is another major focus of the project, divided into two axes. First, the construction of decent housing addresses population needs and respects citizens’ rights. Second, sanitation and the creation of public green spaces aim to improve the urban environment. These actions will restore green spaces, develop landscaping, and enhance urban waste management. Additionally, paving and beautifying major city streets is carried out on a daily basis.

Conclusion

The modernization of Burkina Faso requires policies aligned with current challenges. To a large extent, a country’s development depends on both abundant and high-quality road infrastructure as well as effective urban planning measures. The “Faso Mêbo” initiative represents a path toward addressing urgent needs. Both citizens and authorities must continue this momentum to achieve the desired results. This necessarily entails ongoing support and the sound management of citizen contributions.
