Parents’ Decision or Their Child’s Passion?

Introduction

Almost every year, many children—especially those moving directly from middle or high school to university—face difficulties in choosing their future field of study. In this context, parental imposition often arises, with parents insisting that the child pursue a particular course or field of study. Even when some children refuse, preferring to follow their passions, parents usually have the final say. So, should one always follow their passion? Is the choice imposed by parents always beneficial for the child?

Choosing a Field: A Real Headache

The problem of selecting a university major after secondary school is a major concern. When we talk about choosing a field of study, it is important to note that this decision has a direct impact on the life of the new student, as it shapes the rest of their academic and professional path. Therefore, the student’s future is at stake, and special attention must be given to ensure choices that guarantee a promising future. The real problem arises when children feel pressured by parents who insist, at all costs, on a specific course of study. It is true that parents often finance their child’s education, but should this justify overriding the child’s passion?

What if the Child Made the Choice?

When the child makes the choice independently, and chooses what truly interests them, they are more comfortable continuing their university studies. One can even notice in them a desire to learn more, eventually allowing them to excel in their field. Conversely, if the choice is imposed by parents and does not align with the child’s passion, a lack of motivation becomes evident after the child is forced into that field. Even if all necessary resources are provided, some children struggle to meet their parents’ expectations. Repeated failures, depression, and disappointment often follow. Unfortunately, this problem continues to grow in many families, where children are compelled to pursue fields they do not enjoy—though sometimes, parental decisions do turn out successfully.

A Message to Parents

It is essential to discuss with the child, understand their desires, ambitions, and passions, and choose together a field they genuinely like, rather than imposing a course for which they have no enthusiasm. Supporting the child in their choice of field is crucial, as it affects their life and future. Parents may guide the choice of a field, but they must not disregard the child’s passion, desires, and inner drive. If tomorrow is to be better, preparation must start today.

Conclusion

What should guide a good choice of field? Choosing a field of study is a well-known but life-impacting question. It requires patience, dialogue, and, above all, unity in decision-making. Many people continue to struggle in life, trying to make ends meet, possibly because their initial choice was imposed or poorly guided. It is important to reflect and remember that the actions we take today shape our tomorrow.
