Enhancing French Language Education in Uganda: A Collaborative Initiative

Introduction

The French government, in collaboration with Alliance Française de Kampala (AFK) and the Association of Professors of French in Uganda, has launched a significant initiative to enhance French language education in Ugandan secondary schools. The Equip French Fund (EFF) project, worth €288,450 (Shs1 billion), aims to improve learning resources, strengthen teacher training, and expand access to French programs nationwide.

Project Overview

Inaugurated at Alliance Française de Kampala, the two-year project is designed to bolster French teaching methodologies and support innovative educational approaches. The project emphasizes the growing importance of French language proficiency in Africa, as fluency in French opens doors for Ugandan students not only in France but also across French-speaking nations throughout the continent and beyond.

Key Objectives and Implementation

Eric Touzé, Director of AFK, outlined the project’s goals, which include:

Training of teachers

Pedagogical Methods: Training secondary school teachers in pedagogical teaching methods will be conducted by AFK. This includes a two-day training session at AFK focusing on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and DELF exams, practical application, and gender inclusivity.

Regional Training: French teachers from different regions of Uganda will be invited to participate in training sessions at AFK and subsequently pass on their knowledge to other regions, creating a sustainable cycle of trainers and trainees.

Development of Teaching Resources:

Audiovisual Materials: The project will create audiovisual teaching resources tailored to the local context, benefiting both French teachers and learners in Uganda.

Activity-Based Learning: AFK will organize fun activities in French, adaptable for large groups, to boost the teaching of French as a foreign language. A Francophone label will be created for 15 partner schools.

Enhanced French Programs:

Francophile Fun Camps: The Association of Professors of French in Uganda will organize Francophile fun camps for secondary school students in five regions: West Nile, North, Central, West, and East Uganda.

Continuous Support: AFK will visit schools to provide ongoing support and organize interactive activities, fostering a vibrant French language learning environment.

Impact and Future Prospects

Xavier Sticker, the French Ambassador to Uganda, emphasized that this collaborative effort represents a significant step forward in strengthening ties between France and Uganda. By investing in French language education, the project aims to equip Ugandan students with valuable skills that will foster cultural exchange and enhance their future prospects.

Professor Edith Natukunda Tagboa from Makerere University expressed her enthusiasm for the program, highlighting its potential to provide much-needed teaching materials and promote French as a living language across Uganda. The initiative aims to overcome constraints by popularizing French teaching beyond Kampala, ensuring a countrywide reach.

Conclusion

The Equip French Fund project signifies a substantial commitment to enhancing French language education in Uganda. Through comprehensive teacher training, development of innovative teaching resources, and expanded access to French programs, the initiative aims to improve the quality of French education and strengthen cultural and educational ties between Uganda and France. This collaborative effort will provide Ugandan students with valuable language skills, fostering a brighter future and stronger international connections.
