INFLUENCERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST MISINFORMATION AND DISINFORMATION

Introduction

In the digital age, influencers shape the opinions of thousands of people every day. Faced with misinformation incomplete, erroneous, or outdated information and disinformation, the deliberate communication of false information their role can no longer be ignored. Certainly, freedom of expression is a protected right, but it also implies a legal responsibility: to share verified information.

The Growing Role of Influencers in the Digital Society

Today, influencers quickly spread content among young people. Information is often relayed by them before traditional media. Similarly, influencers can address educational topics, political or cultural opinions. Compared to traditional media, which are regulated, influencers enjoy greater freedom in sharing information.

Controversy Surrounding the Role of Influencers

Strictly speaking, influencers are people who influence others. Mostly emerging from Western culture through reality TV and the rise of social media, they are now increasingly numerous in Africa. However, their role in society is often controversial. On one hand, they are often accused of lying in their content, whether about their lifestyle or in product placements and advertisements. Therefore, it is difficult to imagine that they can contribute to any fight against misinformation and disinformation. On the other hand, some actively engage in providing correct information. For example, some influencers work with organizations and promote human rights such as the right to education or the fight against human trafficking. In other words, influencers can have a real positive impact.

Towards Digital Responsibility for Influencers

Influencers hold an important place in today’s digital society, which many young people grow up in. Currently, young people know influencers better than journalists. Consequently, it is imperative to raise awareness and train influencers on the dangers of misinformation and disinformation; so, they can in turn use their voices to educate, verify, and expose fake news.

Conclusion

It is not new that on social media, there is a tendency to chase likes, views, and followers, which leads some to spread erroneous or even false information. Influencers must work towards combating misinformation and disinformation, especially on social networks. It is even time to regulate their status legally for this very purpose.
