Introduction
The United Nations (UN) identify the empowerment of girls and women as a key lever for combating poverty and promoting sustainable development. This global recognition has been relayed by states, including Cameroon, which are putting in place concrete initiatives to support this process. Currently, in Cameroonian cities and villages, girls and women are encouraged to become involved, finding their fulfilment in entrepreneurship in service of societal progress.
The Case of Grassfields Women
Looking at the example of the West region of Cameroon (the Grassfields), the contribution of women to financial stability and the rise of their families is evident. Wives recognize their husbands’ traditional responsibilities and strive to ease their burdens, particularly in managing the home. In urban areas, many have turned toward small businesses. Without necessarily having extensive education, they demonstrate a remarkable ability to identify local needs and develop profitable initiatives in response. These women are seamstresses, small food vendors, sellers of donuts, or sellers of used clothing. The income generated by their activities often forms the financial backbone of their families, allowing their husbands to focus more peacefully on major family projects. Their dynamism is crucial for the independence and stability of many homes.
The Case of Community-Based Groups
In rural areas, women’s empowerment often involves forming Community Initiative Groups (GICs). These women combine their efforts to clear land and practice large-scale agriculture, thereby ensuring significant profits during harvests. They grow extensive fields of cassava, groundnuts, plantains, and yams. Some specialize in processing these products, adding further value. Those who have received funding from national or international organizations demonstrate remarkable capabilities in various fields, including breeding, designing, and marketing cosmetics, household products, and foodstuffs. These collective initiatives enable them to improve their financial power and their community’s living conditions.
One Condition: Ambition
New technologies also provide empowerment opportunities. Online commerce, for instance, has been embraced by many women. They have trained in digital tools and secured profitable market shares. This path contributes not only to their personal fulfilment by validating their skills but also to improving their income and, by extension, their standard of living.
Conclusion
The empowerment of girls and women is a fundamental development objective. Aware of their social role, women individually or collectively are organizing to maximize their resources and create added value. Support from states and the drive for empowerment act as essential catalysts, unlocking their numerous abilities. This dynamic helps raise the standard of living for all and propels society toward much-needed development.
