Introduction
The teaching profession is a noble one and from time immemorial, it has been the profession that has birthed and still births other professions in the world today. Despite how challenging and tedious the work is, one still ponders on why many people still do it with passion. It is obvious that this profession has been relegated to the background and the amount teachers are being paid does not correspond with the extent of work they do. Not only that, but it has become the last hope of most ‘unemployed’ as they resort to the teaching profession as a means of survival, and this has contributed to the mess we face in the system aside from the negligence of the governing authorities. But what still fuels the passion of others?
Factors That Fuel Some Teachers
There are teachers who are so passionate about the teaching profession, and they have zeroed their minds to face it head-on despite the challenges they encounter and to others, the reverse is the case. There are basically two factors that fuel the passion of teachers, and this is seen in their attitude towards the delivery of their lessons, handling of students and responding to other duties expected of them by the school authority.
Extrinsic Factors
Foremost, some teachers are in the teaching profession because of the financial benefits. Money is essential for a good living but in this category of teachers, getting money supersedes the object of the learning (the learners). Their attitude towards their teaching and the learners is marked with laziness, lack of commitment, poor organisation and other necessary qualities needed for a fruitful teaching and learning experience. Oftentimes, they constitute nuisance in the school environment, and to an extent, harm the learners put under their care. Some of them lack the ethics of the teaching profession but because schools are in need of teachers, anything goes for them and there is no background check on the type of teacher to be employed, and they are willing to give them peanuts.
Intrinsic Factors
On the other hand, some teachers teach because of the passion they have for teaching. They go extra miles to ensure that the aim of the teaching and learning activity is not defeated. These teachers have the fear of God since they know that they are dealing with the destinies of children. They look for ways to improve their teaching skills and methodologies and go to the extent of suggesting ways of building their learners and contributing to the overall growth and development of their schools. Though they need money, they are often much more concerned about the future of their students.
Conclusion
To teachers all over the world, what exactly fuels your teaching profession? If your aim is just to make money and go, know that the destinies of generations are hanging on the line. Whatever you have chosen to do either with your full conscience or by default, do it with the mindset that destinies are involved. Be a passionate teacher!
