Forgotten Future: The Struggle of Street Children for Their Rights

Introduction

Children are the future of Africa. Therefore, the continent’s aspirations and development plans must prioritize their well-being. However, many African children wander the streets without access to education or healthcare. As a result, their futures are being lost, and Africa risks losing its greatest asset. This article highlights the struggles street children face, focusing on their lack of access to education.

Street Children in Africa

A significant number of children in Africa live on the streets, struggling for food, shelter, and survival. Many believe education is beyond their reach, even though it is a fundamental right. Statistics from Michigan State University and Agenzia Fides estimate there are about 10,000 street children in Uganda, 40,000–90,000 in Ghana, 300,000 in Kenya, 600,000 in Sudan, and 2 million in Nigeria. In Malawi, approximately 15,000 children live on the streets, primarily due to poverty, family breakdowns, and the impact of HIV/AIDS. These figures reflect the scale of the crisis across Africa.

Causes and Life on the Street

The reasons children end up on the streets vary. Poverty is a key factor, as some families cannot afford basic needs or school fees. Parental conflicts and neglect also drive children away from home. Uneducated parents often fail to prioritize their children’s education, and some local leaders and communities ignore the plight of these children. On the Streets, life exposes children to extreme hardships. They struggle to find food, clothing, and safe shelter, often sleeping under bridges or in bushes. Many view themselves as worthless and resort to begging or committing petty crimes to survive. Education becomes a distant dream as these children are forced into labour to meet their daily needs. They endure harsh weather, lack medical care when sick, and have little hope for a better future. Yet, they too dream of a life filled with opportunities and dignity.

Impact on Africa’s Development and Possible Solutions

Africa needs education to thrive, eradicate poverty, eradicate imperialism and achieve sustainable development. However, the large number of street children denied education hinders progress. Marginalized and vulnerable, these children risk becoming future criminals instead of contributing to Africa’s prosperity. Street children deserve sympathy and support. Governments must act to bring these children back to school, mobilizing communities to nurture and protect them. Parents must prioritize their children’s welfare, while communities should advocate against forced labour and school dropouts. Every child should be treated as valuable and supported to achieve their potential.

Conclusion

The future of Africa’s children must not be neglected. All children deserve access to basic rights, including education and a decent life. Addressing this issue requires collaboration between governments and communities. Together, we can ensure that Africa’s children no longer struggle in the streets but thrive as the foundation of a brighter future.
