Education quality challenges in Mozambique

Introduction

A great education system takes into account the needs of students, the learning environment, the curriculum, and the learning outcomes in order to give every child the tools, concentration, and attention they require to study and grow. The article will go into great detail about a few of the factors.

Some Basic Education Challenges

Students spend only a few hours in school because of the learning environment’s lack of sustainable infrastructure, which divides them into two or three groups each day. The teacher-to-student ratio of fifty to nearly eighty students in each class is also implicated, making it challenging for the teacher to give each student the bare minimum of attention. A lack of classrooms nationwide, which is characterized by primarily unstable classrooms devoid of furniture in nations that export a lot of natural timber. Unmotivated educational workers as a result of poor working circumstances, as well as low remuneration make a contribution to these challenges. In Mozambique, there is a frequency of syllabus-changing as well as a system that leads to examples of wrongly produced educational material, such as textbooks printed with errors. The lack of distribution of educational material and the automatic pass system witnessed at the basic education level, which is primary to secondary school level. Despite having national exams for exam classes, it will be discredited by the process in which it is handled, for example, the invigilating process as well as the marking process. Having their regular teachers mark them casts doubt on the process because the same teacher has the power to decide who passes and who fails. Some receive higher grades through influence rather than skill; therefore, the examiner’s results are ultimately not known. Instead of each school producing its own certificate, signed by the principal or headmaster, certificates must be issued nationally, with the same design (security features), reference number, and a signature from the designated institutional director.

Higher Education Institutions

With the rise of several private educational institutions, universities, and higher institutions are now more focused on making money than educating students. For instance, for those who provide distance learning, it is now feasible to complete the program without physically being present at the institution because coursework assignments and exams are administered online, making it convenient for the original student in their database to not have to complete the study themselves but to have someone else do it for them in exchange for payment. In the end, that specific person may be deemed a suitable applicant for a job and assigned to it, but not whether he is actually suited for that role. The majority of people who utilize this e-learning system are already employed; they do it merely to have a document to support their high income; they have no interest in learning new things.

Political Influence

The ruling political party has a significant impact on government institutions, especially the education sector. It politicizes these institutions by selecting employees based on their political affiliation, nepotism, and corruption rather than their qualifications. This typically has a detrimental effect and lowers the standard of schooling.

Conclusion

To raise the standard of education, the Mozambican government needs to increase funding for it and resolve unresolved issues. The government should enhance the educational setting and consider capable individuals regardless of their political affiliation.
