Senegal’s Economic Evolution: Job Creation Takes Center Stage at #FTLIVESummit

Introduction

In 2021, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) named Senegal as one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies. The nation’s growth has been driven by substantial investment in infrastructure, including major developments in roads and railways, alongside the burgeoning oil and gas sectors. Since 2012, Senegal’s economy has expanded at an impressive average annual rate of 5%. However, despite this economic momentum, youth unemployment remains stubbornly high, with nearly 20% of young people still without jobs.

Many Senegalese youth feel disconnected from the progress their country is making, as traditional sectors like fishing and agriculture—often essential sources of livelihood—are increasingly impacted by climate change. Severe weather, rising sea levels, and shifts in temperature patterns have reduced yields in these sectors, exacerbating the unemployment crisis. While Senegal’s economic growth brings opportunities, it also underscores the importance of equitable development that includes the nation’s young population in its plans.

Mansour (President of the Senegal-UK Chamber of Commerce) says the Senegalise population is young, so as an investor/company he’ll be looking into the continent to provide those jobs. Seeing that the youth spend hours on their phones, it makes them technology savvy, which becomes easier to help them find jobs around Fintech, Agritech, Edtech and all the Tech jobs or even Agri-business. Its known that the Senegal government is investing heavily on the Agriculture business to absorb the unemployment created in the country. Now as a company what they need to do with the help of partners is to be able to foster and to also make sure that they create jobs.

To address this pressing issue, businesses investing in Senegal have a unique opportunity to support the country’s youth by providing training and upskilling programs tailored to current industry demands. By partnering with educational institutions, offering apprenticeships, and launching vocational training programs, companies can play a pivotal role in building a skilled workforce that meets the needs of Senegal’s expanding economy.

Developing Industry-Specific Training Programs

The growth of Senegal’s oil and gas industry, as well as infrastructure projects, requires a labor force with specialized skills. Businesses can offer programs focused on skills in engineering, technology, logistics, and environmental management. By providing young people with the technical knowledge and hands-on experience these industries demand, companies help reduce the skills gap that can hinder employability.

In addition to hiring and training, companies can support entrepreneurship programs that help young people start their own businesses. As technology becomes central to every industry, businesses can support digital literacy and IT training. By investing in computer labs, coding bootcamps, and online learning resources, companies prepare young people for tech-driven roles and future-proof them for an evolving job market.

By focusing on the training and upskilling of Senegal’s youth, businesses have the power to transform the country’s economic landscape from one of impressive growth to one of inclusive prosperity. Senegal’s continued success depends on creating a labor force that is ready to meet the demands of its growing industries, while also supporting pathways for innovation and sustainable practices. With strategic investment in training and skill development, businesses in Senegal can address unemployment challenges and help build a future where the benefits of growth reach all citizens.
