Master Public Speaking: Increase Your Visibility and Impact

Introduction

Public speaking is a top employer skill since 80% of leadership roles require strong communication. Furthermore, it is the number one career differentiator. It is well known in professional contexts that the possibility of getting promoted doubles when possessing recognizable speaking skills. Meanwhile, personal power comes as a byproduct of mastering this skill by transforming how others perceive the skillful speaker based on the high level of confidence gained. This can even extend to include non-professional situations. Based on the importance of mastering public speaking skills, this article introduces readers to strategies for reinforcing public speaking skills.

Master Your Delivery: Voice and Body

Like any skill, public speaking relies on tools that should be mastered by the speakers. These tools are the pace, pause, and body language. Speaking fast can be mistakenly recognized as a sign of mastering public speaking. Nevertheless, slowing down 20% from normal conversation helps the speaker buy thinking time and command the attention of the audience, especially when having a short-term attention span. There is a myth that assumes silence weakens the speech. However, this silence can be one of the most powerful tools that let ideas land and show confidence. This silence should follow key points to let the audience contemplate and digest them fully. Here, body language comes as the package presenting this to the audience when adopting an open stance, purposeful hand gestures, and eye contact with different audience members.

Structure Your Talk Like a Story

Every memorable talk follows this structure, i.e., hook, body, and close. First, the audience is hooked fast within 30 seconds. This can be achieved by introducing a question, surprise, or joke. The challenge here is to keep it short and fast enough to get the audience to the next stage. Second, the speaker presents the core of the talk. It is highly recommended to focus on only 3 key points, as this is the maximum number for retention. Finally, in the closing stage, the speaker presents a summary of the talk, focusing on the main idea and a call-to-action invitation.

Audience Interaction Techniques

Great speakers do not talk at audiences; they talk with them. So, speakers should use some techniques to keep energy high and attention locked in. Here are three techniques that can be used in these situations. Calling the audience to act based on some instructions is one of the most powerful techniques that can keep the audience engaged. For instance, the speaker can say “Raise your hands if …” or “Turn to someone next to you and …” Another technique is sharing polls and live responses with the audience. The third technique is sharing relatable examples that make people nod in recognition. Emotion drives memory.

Conclusion

Mastering public speaking skills is a matter of practice. Adopting some strategies can make this closer than expected. Controlling the pace, pauses, and body language is the key to mastering delivery of the talk. Meanwhile, the core of the talk should follow a structure: the hook, body, and close sequence. This can happen while relying on audience interaction techniques.
