THE “SOSSOUAGA”,SYMBOL OF CENTURIES-OLD SOLIDARITY IN BURKINA FASO !

Introduction

Burkina Faso is endowed with a rich and diverse culture. Its population is characterized by numerous human and social values that they advocate for in their daily lives. Thus, during the winter season, solidarity work called ‘sossouaga’ in the ‘Mooré’ language is organized among the ‘Mossi’ people. This practice aims to cultivate a spirit of mutual assistance among different communities.

The ‘Mossi’ are a major ethnic group present in Burkina Faso. Solidarity work or ‘sossouaga’ is highly valued in this society. First, it involves a particular family mobilizing a large number of people in a given village or from different localities. To do this, the task is entrusted to children, young people, and public announcers called ‘sossoama.’ These individuals are responsible for providing information about the possible occurrence and the purpose of the solidarity work, a week or more in advance. Indeed, ‘sossouaga’ generally involves fieldwork such as clearing or harvesting. Children go to each household at nightfall to relay the message. The public announcers, on the other hand, visit neighboring communities on market day to invite them to participate. When the day of solidarity work arrives, men, women, and children all gather at the designated location to help their fellow community members. They are accompanied by drums and the songs of griots who praise their acts of mutual assistance.

A Harmonizing Factor

‘Sossouaga’ promotes unity among the people, as everyone comes together for the same cause. Helping others fosters a spirit of mutual aid and instils in the younger generation the importance of solidarity. It also helps cultivate a spirit of tolerance. By working together, people learn to know their neighbor, and their history, to understand that no one is superior to another, and above all, to respect differences. It is a means of strengthening the bonds between different communities, as it helps break down any barriers related to our differences.

A Moment of Reconciliation

At the end of the work, the host family offers a communal meal to all participants as a token of appreciation. Together, they share their dishes while discussing village events, interacting about their experiences, and reminiscing about memories. In a spirit of goodwill, the inhabitants exchange views on various topics, give their opinions, and find solutions to issues concerning the locality. This is an opportunity to enhance social cohesion and create a climate of trust among the residents.

Conclusion

‘Sossouaga’ is a cultural practice that brings together different communities. It teaches individuals the culture of solidarity, empathy, and love for one’s neighbour. Its practice contributes to strengthening social cohesion within communities and building a prosperous nation.
