Human Health: Importance of Bees

Introduction

Do bees have more influence on our health than we think? We already know the flagship product of these little creatures, honey, prized for its exquisite taste as well as its thousand and one virtues. However, few people know of the existence of certain others, which deserve our attention. Indeed, our little yellow and black artisans reward us with pollen, propolis and even their venom which have properties of unsuspected richness.

Pollen or beehive steak

As its name indicates, a real protein-concentrated product which bees feed on. Its composition varies depending on the type of flower from which it is taken as well as its geographical origin. Thus, it provides a wide range of components impacting health and acting on an aesthetic level. Indeed, this superfood, as coined by nutritionists, provides an energy boost by boosting natural defences when used as a treatment. Pollen is also an anti-stress and bad mood ally. It also helps in developing stronger nails and hair, as well as softer and more radiant skin.

Propolis or virgin wax

Used to plug the interstices of the hive, this masonry tool also plays the role of antiseptic. Indeed, bees are known to surround the corpses of small animals stranded in the hive with propolis to avoid possible contagions. Further research revealed its highly antibacterial and antifungal components in humans. Propolis is also valued in dermatology for its healing and antioxidant action. According to some scientists, it would even be able to slow down chemotherapy side effects.

Venom or magic potion

The term “venom”, from the Latin “venenum”, refers to a poison but also to the term “magic potion”. Thus, bee venom causing pain, swelling and itching during stings is also a source of many benefits. It indeed contains enzymes with paradoxically analgesic and anti-inflammatory powers. Moreover, it is an immune system stimulant and has anticoagulant and cardio-tonic components. Even at the aesthetic level, bee venom is used as an anti-aging ally fighting against the appearance of wrinkles and acne. It can be found in various presentations (tablets, creams, lotion among others) and its extraction is done so as not to harm the bees.

Conclusion

The generosity of bees no longer needs to be demonstrated, as it can be seen a variety of their produce. However, they are threatened and have seen their population decline in recent years. We therefore have a duty to protect them and thus return to them the benefits they bestow upon us.
