ADAPTING WELLNESS AS HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

“Health is a state of body. Wellness is a state of being”. –J. Stanford 

Health is wealth worth more than gold. Wellness is being free from illness and with a good mental condition, especially as an actively pursued goal. The journey to wellness to achieve a healthy lifestyle is not easy, as it influences our behaviour to have a healthy and positive lifestyle. “Life is like riding a bicycle” according to Albert Einstein, and in keeping balance, we must keep moving with patience, focus and determination. You can start with small changes within each dimension of wellness and have a break when you cannot go any further. There is no finish line to life since it’s a journey. The same applies to health. The pursuit of wellness is a journey, not a destination. The ultimate goal is our continuous effort of targeting our weakness till it becomes our strength. 

WHAT IS WELLNESS?

Wellness is the state and quality of emotional, mental and physical health. It is about living a life full of dynamic individual management for one’s entire welfare. According to research experts, common health problems such as hepatitis B and depression manifest as loss of appetite, joint pain, fever and stress, physical inactivity, obesity and, heart disease. It has no bearing one; a person’s age, gender, shape or size and wellness is fundamental to the quality and improved life. Wellness accounts for how we ultimately look, feel, and interact with others and advance in life and work.

WELLNESS VERSUS HEALTH 

The WHO defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease, whereas wellness is “the optimal state of health of individuals and groups. Thus, wellness is holistic and multidimensional, the state of a healthy lifestyle practiced over time. For example, one might not be physically fit and healthy, yet practising wellness, thus improving one’s wellbeing and overall health. In contrast, one’s emotional wellbeing might not be sterling but is physically fit and free from disease. We cannot choose the state of our health, but we can consciously choose wellness; by taking active continuous measures and being responsible for our wellbeing. Health includes the state of being free from illness or injury. Wellness is associated with actively making choices and lifestyle changes that lead to holistic health, such as meeting new people, getting a good night sleep, eating more fruits and vegetables.

ADAPTING WELLNESS AS A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE 

Health is a goal, whereas wellness is the active process of achieving it. To adopt a healthy lifestyle, we can practice wellness to help us attain a positive experience. Wellness is multidimensional and holistic. Below is the highlight for various dimensions of wellness, and the more you achieve these dimensions, the better your wellness.

  • Physical wellness: adopting a healthy habits such as dieting and exercising can help us decrease the risk of diseases, stress and increase our energy.
  • Intellectual wellness: this deals with our global engagement with the world through creative and knowledge acquisition and finding ways to solve problems.
  • Environmental wellness: It includes connections, contributions and a physically healthy environment free of hazards, e.g., Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.
  • Social wellness: This deals with how we interactions with others. We can reduce stress, value the diversity and culture of other people.
  • Spiritual wellness: It deals with our sense of purpose and meaning in life to guide our actions. It’s not necessarily religion but can be developed and found through nature.
  • Emotional wellness:  involves accepting our emotions, thoughts, confidence and ability to deal with life challenges.
  • Occupational wellness: It is all about our behaviour towards our work environment, work and workmates. The ability to achieve balanced work and leisure time.

In conclusion, the attainment of good health and wellness is the foundation for inner peace for everyone and spring for working towards our individual goals and contributing significantly to our communities. Practising wellness affirms and encourages positive experiences. Wellness can be achieved by making conscious efforts to develop and having a balance in our multiple life dimensions, including physiological, spiritual, physical, intellectual, financial, environmental and occupational. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on our well-being while respecting and enhancing safety measures.
