Martial arts: self-defence and cultural heritage

Many people find that martial arts can help them in their mental and physical development. In many cultures, they play an important role in the celebration of cultural heritage. In Africa, many martial arts are hundreds, or even thousands of years old, and continue to be popular today. In some communities, they are also a key part of religious or cultural festivals.

What is a martial art?

Martial arts are combat games that focus on self-defence and discipline. They are a popular form of exercise and entertainment. However, people may also take part for exercise or as part of training in the military or the police. Martial arts are often very technical, and can take years to master. This means that discipline and training are very important.

Often, martial arts are similar to cultural dances, and are performed to music. This means that there are often very strict rules. These rules are also important to prevent injuries, and to help decide the winners in competitions.

Common features of martial arts

Martial arts often need equipment, such as a stick or rope, or a traditional form of clothing. However, there are also lots of examples that do not require equipment, meaning that personal strength, speed and balance are particularly important.

Most martial arts include some kind of competition. This can take many forms, but usually, two people compete in ‘combat’, looking to outperform their opponent. In many cases, there is a judge to help decide the winner according to the rules of the game.

Martial arts are often seen as a part of young people’s education. Training can help to build trust and friendships.

Martial arts can be similar to some forms of dance. Like many cultural dances, they can be performed to music, and can form part of rituals and ceremonies. Both are popular forms of entertainment among young people, and can bring communities together.

Case Study: Tahtib

Tahtib is a traditional Egyptian martial art which uses sticks, like many martial arts across Africa. There is evidence that the sport has been played since the time of the Old Kingdom of Egypt. This means that the rules of the sport could have been developing for over four thousand years.

In later years, the sport was often performed at weddings and other festivals, where it was often performed with music. Although tahtib was traditionally only performed by men, women and men now take part together in mixed groups.

What are the benefits of martial arts?

Many martial arts are a good form of exercise. Much like dance, they can help us improve our balance, speed, and strength. Some people think that the discipline that can be learnt from martial arts is good for mental health, as it reduces stress.

For lots of people, martial arts are a vital part of their cultural identity. As long as they are practised safely, they can have lots of benefits for the individual and for the wider community.
