Introduction
Once upon a time, the notion of gaming was narrowed to a teenage boy glued to a screen, lost in a Digi-world of flashing lights, sound effects, and virtual battles. Fast forward to today, that image has broken the stereotype. Where now, you’ll see a 35-year-old man, deeply immersed in a competitive match this time not for leisure, but as part of a billion-dollar business. Gaming and Esports have evolved from being in childhood bedrooms or living rooms into global stadiums, live-streaming platforms, and even investors’ portfolios.
What is the Difference between Gaming and Esports?
To understand the landscape, we must first define Gaming and Esports respectively. Gaming is the general activity of playing video games on any platform, whether on a PC or TV. Esports, short for electronic sports, focuses on competitive video gaming where individuals or teams compete in games like FIFA, often with large or small audiences and with a prize at stake.
The Rise of Esports in Africa
Esports is rapidly growing across Africa. South African universities like Wits and UCT are opening up to this type of gaming. In South Africa, names like Thabo “YvngSavage” Moloi, the first South African signed to an international FIFA team (Red Bull Esports), and Dion “Blast” Mutunhire, a top Zimbabwean Dota 2 player, are some of the few making waves.
The Risks of Esports
Some of the risks associated with Esports are addiction, where, in the 2023/2024 financial year, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) reported that a total of 2,662 individuals were referred for gambling addiction. Among these, 787 were young individuals struggling with this issue. The risk of mental and health issues, while Esports does not involve any physical activity, does require a lot of mental dexterity. Some financial risks at play can include players and sponsors going bankrupt due to excessive betting, accompanied by another risk rearing its ugly head: underground betting. Esports remain unregulated, providing a quick way to earn big cash anonymously. However, many end up unknowingly forming a gambling addiction, falling into financial ruin, and even exposing themselves to danger when losses can’t be paid.
Conclusion
Gaming and Esports has broken through what was once a childhood game into a powerful adult business arena. As Africa embraces this digital revolution, the continent is not only producing talented players but also creating opportunities within the industry.
