What If Electric Transition Became Cameroon’s Great Industrial Project?

Introduction

The energy transition is not only an environmental challenge. It also represents an opportunity for economic development, industrial sovereignty, and strategic transformation for nations. In Cameroon, where motorcycles play a crucial role in daily mobility, transport electrification could become the starting point for a new national industry. The ambition would be to develop a true Cameroonian electric mobility champion capable of transforming a largely informal sector into a modern, structured, and competitive ecosystem.

 

Restructuring the Two-Wheel Sector Through Electric Mobility

Motorcycle transportation represents a strategic opportunity for this transformation. Today, the sector still faces challenges related to identification, traceability, and organization. Introducing electric motorcycles could create a new model based on stronger regulation and better management. Each vehicle could be registered, each user integrated into an official system, and each activity better monitored by public authorities. This modernization would improve security, strengthen administrative management, and promote a more structured economy around transport stakeholders.

 

Building a National Mobility Champion

A Cameroonian company such as Proxym could play a central role in this revolution by developing a complete electric mobility ecosystem. The objective would not only be to sell motorcycles, but to control the entire value chain: vehicle production or assembly, battery swapping stations, maintenance services, technical training, digital management, and the development of a local industrial sector. Before expanding into African markets, Cameroon must first build strong expertise within its own territory. A company capable of understanding local needs, managing its infrastructure, and collecting user data would gain a major strategic advantage.

 

Green Transition as an Economic Driver

Transport electrification could gradually reduce dependence on imported fuels and free resources for other priority sectors. This shift would strengthen the country’s energy sovereignty while encouraging innovation, job creation, and the development of new technical skills. In this way, ecological transition would become a genuine industrial policy. It would allow Cameroon not only to adopt foreign technologies, but also to contribute to their design and adaptation to African realities.

 

A Public-Private Partnership to Build an African Electric Mobility Industry

The success of electric mobility in Cameroon depends on a strategic vision involving the government, businesses, and transport actors. The State should act as a catalyst by creating a favorable environment, supporting national industries, and temporarily protecting emerging sectors. This approach could encourage the development of an innovative African model capable of progressively integrating electric motorcycles and taxis through adapted solutions such as rapid battery swapping systems.

In the long term, Cameroon could become an African platform for electric mobility by mastering infrastructure, standards, and data. The real value would not only lie in vehicle manufacturing, but in controlling the entire ecosystem.
