Scroll Till You Sleep? Rethinking Social Media Addiction and What We Watch

Introduction

We all know the feeling: lying in bed, phone in hand, scrolling TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook reels for hours. Sometimes two or three hours, sometimes the whole night. And yet, the real problem isn’t the scrolling itself. The problem is what we’re watching.

Personal Reflection

Many people spend hours scrolling before they fall asleep. But the scrolling itself isn’t the real problem. If the feed is full of random dances, gossip, or meaningless clips, then yes, it’s a waste of time and sleep. But if the feed is full of learning, storytelling, or motivation, then those hours can feel like an investment. Still, there’s frustration. Most of the content doesn’t remind us to rest or balance. You can scroll endlessly without a single video saying: “Hey, it’s late, go to sleep.” Imagine how different it would be if creators filled our feeds with those reminders.

The Idea

What if social media wasn’t just about keeping us awake but also about reminding us to rest? Imagine scrolling late at night and hitting videos that say: “It’s already midnight, go to bed.” Or “Your health matters more than this scroll.” You wouldn’t cross five videos telling you to stay awake; you’d cross five telling you to take care of yourself. Maybe the next wave of influencers won’t just be dancers or comedians. Maybe they’ll be “digital wellness creators” people who remind us that sleep, rest, and balance are part of the story too.

Recommendations

If the problem isn’t the hours we spend, but what we’re watching, then the solution is simple: follow creators who make those hours worthwhile. There are some educational, motivational and sleep and wellness channels that can help get you sleep, while also making your scrolling time worth it. Channel examples are:

Educational: @thephysicsgirl, @instituteofhumananatomy, @billnye, @mathswithmisschang

Motivational: @MotivationMafia, @6amsuccess, @susandavid_phd, @lizandmollie

Sleep & Wellness: @thesleepdoctor, @reveriez.z.z, @the.holistic.psychologist, @sleepyjoeasmr

The point isn’t to stop scrolling altogether. It’s to make scrolling smarter.

Conclusion

Social media doesn’t have to be mindless. It can be mindful. If our feeds are filled with creators who teach, inspire, or even remind us to rest, then those late-night hours can add value instead of stealing it. It’s your turn. Which accounts do you follow that make scrolling worthwhile? Would you support creators who remind you to sleep, learn, or take care of yourself? Let’s start curating feeds that don’t just entertain us but also protect us.
