From Smartphones to Smart Thinking: Critical Thought in a Digital Africa

Introduction

Africa is turning into a more digitized continent every single day. With the swift access to massive information and big data, the features of the continent are changing dramatically. This definitely leads to creating more opportunities and narrows the digital gap among various nations economically, culturally, and educationally. Nevertheless, it also comes with serious challenges represented in misinformation, manipulation, and shallow thinking. Meanwhile, with this massive access to big data on a daily basis, the human brain loses the ability to think critically about the information presented. However, critical thinking is a crucial skill needed in such situations. Individuals need the ability to question, analyze, and evaluate information delivered. This will help global nations, in general, and African nations, in particular, master the digital space responsibly and productively.

Availability of Information Does Not Guarantee Comprehension

In a digital era, guaranteeing access to data, Africans are swamped with information that is available at their fingertips. But this does not necessarily mean that they are equipped with knowledge, since the availability of information is not equivalent to comprehension. Normally, the human brain cannot process a huge amount of data delivered on a conscious level. Hence, the so-called “gained information” usually gets either distorted or completely forgotten. This means that scrolling through various resources available online via social media platforms, for instance, is not a technically meaningful resource. Out of billions of bits explored in a minute, the brain can basically process, let alone remember, 600 to 3000 bits consciously, according to Technology Networks. Misleading content can be easily accepted when critical thinking is minimized in this overwhelming flood of information.

Critical Thinking Builds Strong Minds

Intellectually, critical thinking empowers individuals in a digitized world, where they are sometimes vulnerable and prone to falsifications. Enlightening questions are asked when activating critical thinking skills, e.g., who created this information? Why was it shared? Is it supported by evidence? etc. Furthermore, Critical thinking leads to innovation and entrepreneurship, where digital tools can be used responsibly. Artificial Intelligence represents the most obvious example proving that critical thinking must be a priority in order to avoid misleading content. Here, reasoning is appreciated rather than rumor. Eventually, this creates communities with a solid foundation that is resilient against manipulation and empowers social trust.

Conclusion

Digital transformation is reshaping Africa. This comes with a blessing and a challenge. The blessing of technological advancement creates great opportunities for development and growth. However, Africans should not forget about the challenge accompanying this breakthrough. Adopting critical thinking immunizes communities so that individuals manage to transform this digital asset into tangible progress in various fields. It leads to sustainable development and, above all, wisdom. Intellectually powerful minds, equipped with critical thinking, construct great communities.
