PCOS VERSUS OVARIAN CYSTS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Introduction

It is no news that PCOS, ovarian cysts, fibroids, and endometriosis are affecting several women of reproductive age globally. Sadly, there is a lot of confusion about PCOS and ovarian cysts being similar because they both involve the ovaries. Some people have the misconception that everyone with PCOS has ovarian cysts. While their names sound similar, they are different conditions with unique symptoms and treatments. Having a clearer understanding of both is essential for getting the right diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care.

What Is PCOS?

PCOS is a short form of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. It is a hormonal condition related to the excessive secretion of androgens (male hormones), which disrupts the menstrual cycle and can affect pregnancy due to irregular egg release. Women with PCOS often experience symptoms like irregular periods, skin breakouts, acne, pimples, hair growth in the chin, stomach, and chest, and fertility problems. Some people start gaining weight around their abdomen, and others experience hair loss. Unfortunately, if it is not managed over time, it puts a woman at risk of diabetes and heart disease. While there is no known cause of PCOS, family history, insulin resistance, and obesity can lead to PCOS.

What Are Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or inside the ovaries. They are extremely common, very harmless, and according to reproductive health sources, about 10-30% of women who menstruate will have ovarian cyst at least once. After the menstrual cycle, unfertilized or immature eggs that do not resorb can form small ovarian cysts, also known as functional cysts. However, there are other types of cysts, such as dermoid cysts, cystadenomas, and endometriomas, among others. Ovarian cysts manifest symptoms, such as pain in the lower abdomen, bloating, and painful sex. However, some of these symptoms depend on the size and location of the cysts.

The Difference Between PCOS And Ovarian Cysts

PCOS is a hormonal disorder in which there are small follicles inside the ovaries, while ovarian cysts are large sacs that come in various sizes, which may or may not affect hormones. PCOS can be caused by a hormonal imbalance and insulin resistance, while ovarian cysts are often caused by a normal menstrual process. PCOS shows symptoms like irregular periods, acne, hair growth, and infertility, while ovarian cysts show bloating, pelvic pain, and abdominal pain. PCOS is usually a long-term health concern, while ovarian cysts are usually temporary and benign.

Treatment for PCOS And Ovarian Cysts

While there is no permanent treatment for PCOS, it can be managed through weight loss, dietary changes, hormonal birth control pills, and medications like metformin for insulin resistance. But first, you need to go for blood tests and an ultrasound scan for confirmation. For ovarian cysts, they can be treated with pain relief medications, hormonal birth control pills to prevent a recurrence, and if they are large in size, they would be treated surgically. However, you’ll need a pelvic scan to determine the location and size of the cyst.

Conclusion

Although both PCOS and ovarian cysts involve the ovaries, they are fundamentally very different. While PCOS is a hormonal and metabolic disorder with implications all over the body, ovarian cysts are mostly benign sacs that resolve naturally or surgically if they are larger. While you cannot decide one from the other by merely looking at a woman, you will need to see the doctor to avoid misdiagnosis and get proper treatment.
