Implications of Theoretical Positivism on Metaphysical Materialism

Introduction

Positivism, by establishing the scientific method as the sole source of valid knowledge, imposed a significant challenge on metaphysical materialism. While classical materialism sought to understand the ultimate nature of “substance,” positivism restricted this inquiry to the level of observable phenomena. The primary implication is the scientification of Being: metaphysics was forced to abandon pure abstraction to ground itself in empirical data. This article analyzes the transition from “speculative materialism” to a sophisticated physicalism, where reality is validated through measurement, weight, and replication, while still grappling with the essence of existence.

Matter and Essence: A Two-Sided Coin

We should not view matter and essence as opposing substances, but as dimensions of the same reality a Modern Hylomorphism. Matter is the potentiality and physical structure; essence is the organization, purpose, or consciousness that emerges from that structure. Imagine a coin: matter is the metal, while essence is the value and the effigy it carries. One cannot circulate without the other. In contemporary materialism, essence is not a “spiritual” entity outside the world, but an emergent property of material complexity. This means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and meaning arises from the specific way matter is organized.

Scientific Progression in Metaphysical Philosophy

Science has not replaced metaphysics; it has refined it. The progression from Newtonian mechanics to Quantum Physics has pushed philosophy into realms previously unimaginable. When neuroscience maps synapses to understand subjectivity, or when physics studies the quantum vacuum, it is engaging in “Experimental Metaphysics.” The impact of this lineage is the breakdown of simplistic materialistic dogma. At its deepest level, matter behaves in ways that defy purely classical logic (such as entanglement and superposition), requiring new metaphysical frameworks to explain how “solid” reality emerges from a field of probabilities.

Monism, Dualism, and the Linguistic Turn

The central debate concerns the nature of the mind. Materialist Monism views humans as purely biological, while Dualism, such as Property Dualism argues that subjective experience (qualia) cannot be fully captured physically. The 20th-century Linguistic Turn showed that many metaphysical puzzles were actually linguistic confusions. Today, Non-Reductive Physicalism maintains a material basis but recognizes consciousness as irreducible like the beauty of a painting that cannot be explained solely by its chemical pigments.

Thought and Action: The Double-Edged Sword

Thought meets ethics in the link between reflection and action. Positivism gives us the “how,” but metaphysical materialism provides the “why.” Acting without understanding human essence turns society into an efficient but purposeless machine; ethical action recognizes that our material deeds carry ontological significance.

Conclusion

Theoretical positivism did not destroy metaphysics but grounded it in reality. Contemporary metaphysical materialism sees that while the world is made of particles, the meaning of existence lies in the relationships between them. Only by combining scientific rigor with philosophical depth can we fully understand humans: matter in motion guided by essences no scale can measure.
