Sundiata Keita: The Real Lion King

Introduction

Sundiata Keita was the first emperor of the Mali Empire and is the protagonist and subject of many oral legends, but when he was born, it did not seem as if he were destined for greatness at all. His story of overcoming adversity and establishing a prosperous empire embodies themes of destiny, redemption, and greatness, similar to the Disney classic.

Childhood

Sundiata Keita was born into Malinke nobility; his father was the king of Kangaba, the Malinke Kingdom in the Ghana Empire. Though it is not clear what he suffered from, Sundiata Keita was a sickly child. In the oral poem ‘The Epic of Sundiata,’ he is recounted as being unable to walk until he is 7 years old. Before he was born, his father, Nare Maghan, received a prophecy stating that he was destined to be king and so named him as his successor before he died, despite him not being the king’s first son. When Nare Maghan dies, however, it is his eldest son, Sundiata’s half-brother Dankaran Touman, who becomes king. Sundiata’s mother, Sogolon, feared that Dankaran Touman and his mother, Saussoma, would kill her son and so escaped the kingdom.

Rise to Power

Sundiata and his mother reached the kingdom of Mema, and they fell into the favour of the king, Moussa Tounkara. Sundiata Keita became a warrior, fighting alongside the king and gaining the respect of the people of Mema. Now strong enough to fight, Sundiata returns to Kangaba and reclaims the throne from his half-brother. From there, Sundiata Keita goes about acquiring territory, and eventually, in 1240, he seized and razed the capital of the Ghana Empire, Kumbi. This symbolised the end of the Ghana Empire and the birth of the Mali Empire, which he would rule until his death in 1255.

Legacy and Legend

The Mali Empire that Sundiata Keita founded prospered into one of the wealthiest empires at the time, and was ruled some years later by Sundiata’s grand-nephew, widely considered to be the richest man in history. It is under Sundiata’s rule that the Mali Empire created one of the very first charters of human rights, the Kouroukan Fouga, and an oral code that speaks of the abolition of slavery, the right to education, and the right to food security. Sundiata Keita’s life can certainly be described as legendary, and he features as the subject of many oral legends, most notably the ‘Epic of Sundiata’, which has been passed down for thousands of years through the griots or storytellers of West Africa. The name Sundiata Keita means The Lion King. His story of transforming from a sickly child to a mighty warrior and thwarting his tyrannical half-brother reflects many themes that Disney draws on in the film, The Lion King.

Conclusion

Sundiata Keita’s life exemplifies resilience and leadership. From a sickly, doubtful child to the Mali Empire, he shaped history through courage, wisdom, and determination. Beyond conquest, he established laws promoting justice, education, and welfare. His story, preserved in the Epic of Sundiata, continues to inspire generations.
