Tobacco: A Silent Danger with Devastating Effects

Introduction

It is increasingly common to see smokers wandering around with cigarettes in their hands in markets, at bus stops, on avenues, and in working-class neighbourhoods. Gradually, tobacco smoke is becoming more prevalent in public spaces, exposing the population to health risks that are often underestimated. However, tobacco not only harms the health of smokers, but it also poses a real danger to those around them.

What is Tobacco?

Tobacco is a plant whose dried leaves are processed into cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, or rolling tobacco. Native to Central America, it releases a substance called nicotine when consumed. This powerful molecule provides a feeling of pleasure, but above all, it causes strong physical and psychological dependence. In addition, the manufacture of tobacco products involves the addition of numerous chemicals designed to improve taste and texture, thereby increasing their harmful effects.

The Health Consequences of Tobacco

Tobacco is responsible for many serious diseases. It is directly implicated in several types of cancer, including lung, mouth, throat, oesophagus, and bladder cancer. Smoking also significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure. Smokers are also more prone to chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, which permanently impair quality of life. In pregnant women, smoking can cause miscarriages, premature births, or low birth weight. Non-smokers are not spared either. Passive smoking exposes both children and adults to serious health risks. Beyond its health effects, tobacco is a heavy economic burden. The cost of medical care for smoking-related diseases puts considerable pressure on health systems, which are already fragile in many African countries. Added to this are productivity losses due to illness, work disability, and premature death.

Conclusion

A veritable public health scourge, tobacco has serious and often irreversible consequences. Its effects go beyond the individual and affect society as a whole. In the face of this silent danger, prevention, awareness-raising, and compliance with public health regulations are essential levers for protecting present and future generations.
