MYTHS CONTRIBUTING TO LACK OF ACCESS TO PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICES IN ZAMBIA

Introduction

Many people in Zambia, including stroke survivors, bedridden patients, or those with injuries, face challenges when trying to access affordable physiotherapy. This is attributed to myths and misunderstandings about what physiotherapy really involves. These beliefs, especially common in rural areas, discourage people from getting the care they need. Clearing up these misconceptions can help more people benefit from the role of physiotherapy in recovery and fitness.

Commonly Identified Myths

Myth #1: Physiotherapy is painful

Fact: Physiotherapy is all about safe, careful movements. Physiotherapists will not push you into unbearable pain. Instead, treatment is adjusted to your comfort level and progresses gradually to help reduce stiffness, promote healing, and restore movement. Sometimes, you might feel some mild discomfort, but that is usually a sign that you are improving, not the pain causing you harm.

Myth #2: Surgery is the only option

Fact: Many health problems can improve a lot with physiotherapy alone, without necessarily involving surgery. This is true worldwide and in Zambia too. Conditions such as back pain, frozen shoulders, arthritis, or falls in older adults often respond well to physiotherapy. If surgery is needed, physiotherapy before and after the procedure can make recovery smoother and faster.

Myth #3: Physiotherapy is just for injuries or athletes

Fact: Physiotherapy helps with much more than just injuries or sports. It supports people dealing with chronic pain, women’s health concerns like pelvic floor issues, neurological problems such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease, post-surgery recovery, balance and fall prevention for older adults, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, work-related aches or ergonomics, and more. If you want to move better, get stronger, or make daily tasks easier, physiotherapy can help, and not just to alleviate injuries.

Myth #4: I can just follow YouTube videos

Fact: Exercise is not a one-size-fits-all idea. What works well for one person might actually make the condition worse for another person. A physiotherapist looks at your posture, movement, pain, and lifestyle, then creates a personalized program specifically for you. This tailored approach is the safest and most effective way to recover and improve.

Myth #5: Physiotherapy only offers temporary relief

Fact: Physiotherapy goes beyond short-term fixes. It focuses on finding and treating the root cause of your problem. Improving strength, movement, and how your body works day-to-day helps you live a more active, pain-free life in the long run.

Conclusion

Physiotherapy is about helping people move freely, reduce pain safely, regain independence, and improve strength and balance. It is a scientific, evidence-based profession centered on educating patients and providing personalized care. When physiotherapy works alongside other healthcare services, it supports a well-timed and smooth approach to health. Breaking down myths and raising awareness is key to helping more people in Zambia access and benefit from physiotherapy at the right time.
