Intermittent Fasting: Benefits and Drawbacks

Introduction

Recently, intermittent fasting has been considered one of the most effective methods for achieving weight loss. Meanwhile, it comes with a byproduct that is represented in a healthy lifestyle. When compared to other diets available, intermittent fasting emphasizes when individuals consume food rather than what they consume. Hence, food is consumed within set windows, outside of which fasting dominates the situation. Nevertheless, this argument should be science-backed to be taken seriously. This article aims to raise awareness of the potential benefits and drawbacks of intermittent fasting according to recent research findings. Arguments presented herein are meant to increase public awareness of intermittent fasting. They do not replace the proper medical consultation presented by healthcare professionals, who should be consulted in person to change the diet.

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting gained its reputation when it became attributed to managing weight issues as well as controlling metabolic health. The emphasis of the WHO on the necessity of gaining the ideal body weight and a healthy metabolic system to resist potential diseases coincides with the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of intermittent fasting presented by scientific medical studies. The New England Journal of Medicine, for instance, published a study asserting the possibility of burning fats and limiting calories consumed when following specific intermittent fasting plans. Eventually, this leads to attaining the ultimate goals of controlling weight. Metabolic health improves when restricting food consumption to a specific time during the day. This notion applies to fat metabolism and insulin sensitivity. This mechanism aligns intermittent fasting with the international trends focusing on reducing obesity and diabetes. According to the WHO, there are two major concerns threatening health globally today.

Potential Drawbacks of Intermittent Fasting

The previously mentioned benefits of intermittent fasting do not nullify the possibility of emergent drawbacks resulting from following the intermittent fasting diet patterns. To have a bigger image of its impact, intermittent fasting has to be experimented with in a variety of contexts to test its nutritional appropriateness, following FAO and UNICEF regulations that stress the necessity of making healthy nutrition available to all people. As stated by the FAO’s State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, millions are confronting the danger of malnutrition globally. Hence, the notion of intermittent fasting can assume the possibility of experiencing the same condition when failing to have access to the essential nutrition due to unplanned intermittent fasting, followed without consulting a professional nutritionist. Risk increases when food quality is not met properly, along with limiting eating spans. Furthermore, some segments may be prone to extreme danger when encountering such restricted food consumption since they have a higher level of nutritional needs. These segments include teenagers, breastfeeding mothers, and pregnant women. Hence, such intermittent fasting patterns need to be followed under medical supervision to avoid any future complications or side effects.

Future Research Aspirations

Scientific research conducted on intermittent fasting is still emerging. This does not match the speed at which it is gaining popularity worldwide. Therefore, the pace of relevant studies has to increase to unveil more about the potential aspects of intermittent fasting. This might provide answers to a variety of unanswered questions. As per the current research available, there are two major issues. First, the samples selected for conducting such studies are relatively small. In this case, conclusions drawn cannot be extended to the whole population under investigation. Second, study durations are relatively short. Hence, the sustainability of the results concluded remains questionable. There are several patterns of intermittent fasting, e.g., daily time-restricted feeding, alternate-day fasting, or periodic prolonged fasts. This fact necessitates conducting more intensive research to discover the most effective patterns. Several intervening factors must be taken into consideration when conducting research, e.g., gender, genetics, and lifestyle. They all influence an individual’s reaction to intermittent fasting. The accumulated knowledge resulting from conducting this research will lead to gathering more evidence, helping individuals comprehend how intermittent fasting aligns with their health conditions.

Conclusion

As depicted previously, intermittent fasting presents an alternative pattern via which food is consumed. This depends on setting a specific time window within which these nutrients are allowed to be served. This pattern comes with benefits and drawbacks depending on the health condition of individuals following this diet pattern. Hence, it is necessary to balance these benefits against potential risks. With limited scientific evidence on how such diet patterns affect the human body, little can be inferred regarding their supreme impact. This situation requires conducting more research to find out how to extend benefits and restrict risks. Meanwhile, jeopardizing the health condition of vulnerable groups can be minimized. Last but not least, none of these intermittent fasting patterns should be followed without medical supervision, guaranteeing protection against potential health issues.
