Introduction
Women’s entrepreneurship in Togo is experiencing remarkable growth, supported by government initiatives, support programs, and a growing determination among women to actively contribute to the country’s economic development. However, despite these advances, challenges remain, requiring ongoing attention to ensure a favourable environment for the empowerment of women entrepreneurs.
Government and Private Initiatives for Women Entrepreneurs
The Togolese government has implemented several programs aimed at promoting women’s entrepreneurship. Among these, the “Nana Tech” program, launched in June 2024, stands out with its objective of training 1,500 women entrepreneurs in digital professions. Inspired by the famous “Nana Benz” — iconic female traders of the 1970s–80s — this program seeks to integrate information and communication technologies (ICT) into women’s business activities to increase their competitiveness and productivity. In addition, structures such as INNOV’UP, a certified AfricInnov incubator, play a crucial role by supporting young and women entrepreneurs. Since its creation, INNOV’UP has supported more than 846 businesses, over 80% of which have been formalized, thereby contributing to the creation of more than 500 jobs.
Tailored Financing Programs
Access to financing remains a major obstacle for many women entrepreneurs. To address this, financial institutions such as Ecobank have launched programs like Ellever, designed to provide preferential loans, training, and networking opportunities for African women entrepreneurs.
Persistent Challenges
Despite these initiatives, several challenges remain. Limited access to financing: Although programs exist, access to credit remains difficult for many women, often due to insufficient guarantees or strict banking conditions. Lack of specialized training: Many women entrepreneurs lack tailored training in business management, digital marketing, and leadership, which limits their ability to grow and sustain their businesses. Gender stereotypes: Women entrepreneurs face cultural and social prejudices that can hinder their progress and recognition in the business world.
Future Perspectives
To strengthen women’s entrepreneurship in Togo, the following points are essential. Enhance training programs: Provide continuous training in business management, ICT, and leadership to equip women with the skills necessary for success. Facilitate access to financing: Simplify credit procedures and offer guarantees adapted to the realities faced by women entrepreneurs. Promote gender equality: Raise awareness of women’s contributions to economic development and fight against gender stereotypes.
Conclusion
Women’s entrepreneurship in Togo is expanding, supported by both government and private initiatives. However, to ensure inclusive and sustainable development, it is crucial to continue addressing existing challenges and to create a favorable environment for the flourishing of women entrepreneurs.
