Whispers of the Baobab: A Climate Lament

The baobab stands, ancient and wise,
Its branches stretched to the sun-drenched skies.
Once a giant of verdant plains,
Now a witness to the land’s growing pains.

The winds that once carried tales of old,
Now whisper stories of heat untold.
Drought has claimed its rightful throne,
And the earth, once vibrant, is now alone.

Where rivers ran with songs of life,
Now there is silence, cutting like a knife.
The trees no longer sway with ease,
Their leaves a memory in the dying breeze.

The soil, once fertile, cracked and dry,
Begging for rain, but the clouds pass by.
The baobab laments, its voice a sigh,
For the lands that once reached for the sky.

“Who will listen?” it asks the air,
As it bears witness to the land’s despair.
Its roots dig deep, seeking the past,
While the future slips away, too fast.

Yet in its heart, a flicker of hope,
A call to those who know how to cope.
“Save the earth,” it softly pleads,
“Before the land is lost to greed.”

The baobab whispers, yet so loud,
A cry for help beneath the shroud.
For the future rests in hands so small,
But it is enough to heed the call.

Poem Description

This poem uses the imagery of the baobab tree—a symbol of Africa’s resilience and strength—to lament the devastating effects of climate change on the African landscape. The tree, once a beacon of life, now reflects the environmental struggles caused by drought, deforestation, and soil erosion. The poem expresses the urgency of addressing climate change and the need for sustainable environmental practices to preserve Africa’s landscapes for future generations. The baobab’s whisper is both a lament and a call to action, urging humanity to respond before it’s too late.
