Parental Stress in Ensuring Children Attend Grade A Schools in Africa

Introduction

Many countries in Africa including Sierra Leone, some big schools that are having a conducive learning environment are considered to be “Grade A” schools or Prestigious schools than the other struggling schools in most cities in Africa. The problems of attending a prestigious school bring more stress to both parents and their children.

Competitiveness

The high number of pupils wanting to attend those schools is increasing at an alarming rate. But the fact remains, not all of them gain admission into such schools even in universities of their choice. Children normally fail to realize that the admission criteria in such schools are rigid due to the fact that more pupils (more than the expected number) want to attend the same school that is having fewer classrooms to accommodate all of them, they are not aware that a huge number of pupils have also chosen the same schools.

Financial Constrains on Parents

Observations made by so many educators and school leaders have proved that highly educated and well-paid parents always want their children to attend good schools so as for them to feel very proud of themselves. Parents are of the opinion that attending a “Grade A” school provides for their children the best routes to university education, thus guaranteeing access to a higher education and consequently access to a well-paid job or prestigious occupation. Parents go the extra mile to spend huge amounts of money for their children to gain admission to those schools; the administrations of such schools have a cut-off admission line or set standards for parents and children. The worst could be if children do not meet the set criteria, parents are willing to pay an extra amount of money for their children to gain admission to those “Grade A” schools.

Conclusion

Attending a “Grade A” school does not determine the success of a pupil academically; the determination of the pupil in terms of readiness to learning count, most professors in Africa did not attend “Grade A” schools. Parents should encourage their children at home when it comes to education. Whatever school they attend, attention should be given to them by preparing their minds that education is key to success. Regardless of the school a pupil attends, the administration should ensure that set standards are followed in terms of curriculum design.
