Happy New Year
Dear fellow pilgrim!
Once more we’re given here
a precious time to use.
Only the Creator
who plans, fully understands
the value, the real feature
of what comes from His hands.
And so we pray and ask:
May we advance from yesterday
in each purposed task
and walk the righteous way.
May spirit, body, and heart
be blessed in unity;
bravery making us smart
in our zealous journey.
May jealousy be slain
Among friends and kin…
Together we bury old pain
and let new trends begin.
May the state leaders
Be worthy of that name.
Citizens’ faith wavers
under poverty’s shame.
May the world citizen
Care for the planet Earth.
Global warming concerns
Lives even before birth.
Be brave, dear pilgrim,
Embrace the new page.
This year shapes your future,
A precious love of age.
Poem Description
The poem celebrates New Year’s Day as a time for wishes and renewal, both personally and globally. In most cultures, New Year’s Day, whatever the date, is marked by joyful family and religious celebrations. This poem emphasizes renewal, paralleling the new year with time valuation, personal growth, social trends, and political and environmental issues. The speaker of the poem, considering the new year, sees themselves as a “pilgrim” on Earth. This transient existence and short mission give them a heightened sense of accountability towards oneself, the Creator, fellow citizens, and the future.
