Human Rights in the Post-Electoral period in Mozambique

Introduction

Mozambique has experienced several moments of instability since its independence in 1975 Mozambique’s instability was created by the emergence of a political force that was not in accordance with the governmental form. Due to this civil war, many infrastructures were destroyed including human lives. The economy slowed down significantly. Approximately 30 years after signing the Lusaka agreements in 1992, the Mozambican people remain firm and resilient in maintaining multiparty democracy and developing the country’s economy. Because Mozambique belongs to Mozambicans, any tendency towards destabilization of the country brings criticism from all sides and the best form of expression happens during the electoral period in which the people have the privilege of choosing their own president.

Electoral Process in Mozambique

Mozambique had its first electoral ballot in 1994 where the party currently in power managed to retain its leadership until now. However, directly interested parties have always contested electoral results. What is currently happening, and which differs from past times, is the fact that in the 2024 elections, claims about the results are taking place with the active participation of the Mozambican people across the country.

Peace and Democracy in Mozambique in the Post-electoral Period

Peace is compromised by the fact that many citizens take to the streets demanding their vote and requesting electoral justice. Peace is also compromised by the fact that the country’s defence and security professionals are using excessive force to repress protesters, even though they know that according to the constitution of the Republic of Mozambique, demonstration is a constitutional right. The democracy in the country tends to be murdered, since everything that is said about democracy, nothing is done because it is understood that it can contribute to the collapse of a certain political entity. Democracy is being destroyed from the moment the Mozambican people are repressed by tear gas, rubber bullets, and real bullets in their peaceful demonstrations. Democracy is being murdered as the Mozambican government imposes restrictions on access to information due to the cut in internet supply. Democracy is being murdered as public and private goods are being destroyed, including oppression of the free movement of people and goods. According to Article 3 of the Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique, “the sovereignty of the country resides in the people”. These people are spoiled in every way during election campaign times. However, when the voting process ends, the same people are also discarded in every way.

Destruction of Sovereignty

The sovereignty of the people is compromised because people are subjected to inhumane treatment. The right to life enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique was lost, opening space for point-blank shooting at protesters.

Conclusion

Mozambique needs to non-partisanize all electoral management institutions and ensure that everyone’s concern is the people. It also needs to reduce the waiting time for results to guarantee transparency and fidelity of information.
