NGOUON: THE EMBLEMATIC FESTIVAL OF THE BAMOUNS A FESTIVAL THAT HAS TRANSCENDED GENERATIONS

Introduction

After a long absence from the Cameroon festival scene, due to Covid 19 and the death of the 19th king of the dynasty, His Majesty Ibrahim Mbouombouo Njoya, in September 2021, Ngouon is back with a vengeance. With a date set for 29 November to 08 December 2024 in Foumban, preparations are in full swing. The priority remains a vibrant call for a massive presence of worthy sons and daughters of the Ngouon and lovers of culture. An invitation without restrictions that will win over hearts and minds. Let’s discover together the secrets of this cultural machine that has been able to export and impose itself beyond time and borders.

The Transmission of Bamoun Culture: more than a duty, a mission

Strengthening community ties is of paramount importance to the Bamoun. It is important for every citizen to know their history, their sacrifices, and the prowess their ancestors made to build this kingdom. To this end, it is the duty of every Bamoun to maintain this community cohesion and to foster enthusiasm for its traditions, reconnecting with one’s roots, and asserting one’s identity heritage, ensuring the transmission of this noble cultural torch to the younger generation is and remains a duty for every Bamoun.

Varied and Inclusive Festivities

The Ngouon presents a wide range of activities that contribute to making it more memorable. Specially designed for the occasion, the Ngouon Village – the hub of the festival – is a place of artistic expression where performances of all kinds are organized (songs, dance, humor, etc.) in order to celebrate local and national artists. In addition, it is a real economic and social meeting place, where entrepreneurs, craftsmen, and social activists mingle with a view to promote their brands, products, and activities. Bamoun beauty and cuisine are also celebrated through the Miss & Master Ngouon and Master Chef Ngouon competitions

The Promise of Authentic and Meaningful Celebrations

In addition to the traditional festivities that include exhibitions, dances, and songs, Ngouon is packed with new, authentic, and unique activities that are at the heart of Bamoun culture. These include the King’s Judgement ceremony, a powerful democratic act during which the Sultan King is called to account for the running of the kingdom following the observations and criticisms of the Fona Ngouon, representing a small consultative assembly. Not forgetting the Shoh Mulüeh, an exhibition ceremony that recalls the post-war show of strength by the warriors. An opportunity to get creative by wearing traditional outfits and accessories.

Conclusion

With the certificate of inscription on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list officially presented to the State of Cameroon on 28 November 2024, the Ngouon augurs well for beautiful promises and the future. More than 500 years old, the catalysts for its continued existence are now known. There is unanimous agreement on the affirmation of a growing cultural identity, which has been able to tame the influences of globalisation.
