Introduction

At the heart of the Republic of Guinea stands the world-famous Dame du Mali (Néné Foutah), a silhouette and presumed pareidolia of a woman visible on the eastern flank of Mount Loura. A mountain that constitutes the highest peak of the Fouta Djallon massif. It culminates at 1, 515 meters above sea level. The mountain is in northern Guinea; in Mali, a prefecture that is 471 km from the capital. This tourist attraction is naturally carved from stone due to erosion and appears as a woman of remarkable beauty that has overlooked the region for centuries. Thus, from the top of its cliff, it dominates the plain which extends over Senegal.

Pareidolia:

According to the Oxford and Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is a scientific term used to refer to the tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern. A misperception of random stimuli as real things or people, as when faces are vividly seen in the flames of a fire or the flank of a mountain. Pareidolia is very common and phenomenological.

Sculpted by erosion due to wind and high precipitation:

Mountains are known to lift sand blown by wind that flows over them, the sand contains particles that slowly eat away their surfaces and cause increased precipitation on the range’s windward slopes, intensifying erosion as a result.

In general, wetter conditions favor faster rates of erosion; however, more moisture also promotes the growth of vegetation, which also contributes to damage on the surface of rocks. This is specific to mountains in heavy rainfall latitudes and makes them vulnerable to erosion, which is the case for Mount Loura which is situated in the region of Foutah Djallon where heavy rainfalls have been recorded over the years. 

Legend

According to legend, it represents an unfaithful woman who was turned to stone by the curse of her husband.

Conclusion: Change of name

In 1989, the president at that time visited the site with some of his cabinet members, they were all astonished by its beauty. Reflecting on the story tied to the mountain and considering that mistakes are human. A change of narrative was necessary, so they decided that the woman should be remembered as a good person. The mountain was renamed Néné Foutah (Mother of Foutah) because she overlooked the whole region.
