The Importance of Home and Family

Introduction

The terms ‘home’ and ‘family’ are interrelated, thus, their importance cannot be overemphasized. The two work together, whereby one cannot do without the other. For a family to be called one, there must be a home to accommodate it and vice versa. Hence, these two are important to each other. A home and a family are the center of a person’s life, and where everyone should feel most comfortable in the world. This article will be based on the definitions of a house, home and family and the importance of a home and a family to you. 

What is a Family?

A family is a group of people that are related by blood, marriage or adoption, that interact with each other in their social roles and responsibilities and usually share many things in common house, finance etc.  A family is the smallest social unit in any society that forms the basis for social order. 

What is a Home?

A home is a place where people live permanently, especially as a member of a family/household.

A home can also refer to an institution where people needing professional care/supervision live. For example, ‘the home for the aged’ 

A home can also refer to the birthplace/origin of an individual.

What is a House?

A house is a building in which humans reside or meet for a particular activity. The name of a house/building depends on its use. For example, a building where Muslims worship is called a mosque while those that are used for academic purposes are called schools.  

 

Differences between a House and a Home.

The differences between a house and a home are not that distinct yet exist. Thus, though similar, but have their differences.

Home: a house or an apartment or location where a person or a family lives with set out rules on how things are done to maintain order. A home is more organized than a house.

House: a building where a person or a family lives.

However, the main difference between them is that a house is the physical concrete building in which a person lives. Whilst, a home can refer to either a building or any location or place a person thinks he/she can live and that belongs to him/her.  A home can also refer to the origin/birth place of a person. For example; a Sierra Leonean living out country might say I am going to my home country- Sierra Leone.

The Importance of Family and Home

A home and family are important for the following reasons:

  • Building confident
  • Relieving stress/making people less stress
  • Making people feel most comfortable
  • Help in determining how people make life decisions
  • Help in shaping attitudes
  • Help in creating your self-awareness, self-worth and self-esteem
  • Help in providing support and security.
  • Provide unconditional love, peace and harmony.

Conclusion

To crown it all, the importance of home and family to our lives cannot be over-emphasized as everything starts and ends with them. Home and family are the most important things in everyone’s life.
