Introduction 

 Being self-employed means being an independent proprietor. It means working for one’s self, earning an income, and deciding what to do with it instead of working for a company that pays a monthly salary. Due to the financial crisis that individuals face day in and day out, more people are finding ways to make an honest living off of their skills and God-given talents that they possess, trying to bring unemployment to a halt. There is an African proverb that goes, “Good things don’t come from a silver platter,” and so being self-employed takes persistence, dedication, and resourcefulness to work for oneself. This article will examine the perks of self-employment and creation and how it promote financial independence. 

Constituting Employment 

Naturally, when it comes to starting one’s own business, individuals mostly are perturbed by the risks and fears of failure. They then forget that it’s not all so bleak and grey. There are great things one can access and learn as time goes on, which allows individuals to grow and flourish not only in their business or career paths but in their respective lives as well.  Most people are forced to create employment for themselves as unemployment levels vary significantly across African countries. Whether one is freelancing or starting their own company, self-employment allows individuals to do work that they find interesting, which, as I mentioned earlier, allows them to turn what was just a hobby into something that they make money from. Moreover, they can decide to extend their skills or share them with other people through workshops and training. 

Self – Independence 

 Rather than reporting to someone or following certain rules provided by a company, self-employed individuals make decisions and set goals for their businesses with a particular vision in mind, allowing them to be in control.  Furthermore, individuals tend to make their own schedules, which is not always the case with employed individuals, as a specific schedule is provided to them instead. This provides the individual with flexibility, allowing him or her to spend time with family and take time off for vacation without seeking anyone’s approval, however, it requires a lot of discipline. 

Autonomy and Self-Determination 

When one has their own business, they can decide if they want to expand it and if so, they have the advantage of choose their environment and co-workers. This provides them with the option to choose a place suitable for their business, especially for their target audience, plus they get to choose people who share their values and work ethics to work for them. Which will help the business move forward swiftly. Moreover, working for oneself allows people to have critical thinking skills, invites individuals to be as creative as possible, keeping their clients in mind of the services they see fit to be offered and shapes one’s standards and branding. 

Conclusion

Best of all, self-employed individuals are one of the most hardworking people one can find and therefore they should be perceived as national treasures of this world. They have not only overcome certain financial situations but they have also created employment for themselves, which is an enormous accomplishment.  Ergo, it’s up to us as a continent and world to motivate individuals to pursue such initiatives for everyone has something to offer to bring the unemployment rate to an end once and for all.
