Introduction
Freedom of expression is a fundamental right enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Defined by the same declaration in 1948 as the right of the individual to make known the product of his intellectual activity to those around him, today one unfortunately must recognise the damage and even the limits of this freedom enjoyed by human beings.
Are we talking about hate speech on social networks?
The development of technology has led to the emergence of social networks such as Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Millions of people a day interact and communicate via these social networks. While it’s true that freedom of expression exists, unfortunately, we have to admit that some people abuse it and violate the privacy and dignity of others. Every day, thousands of people are insulted, called names and put down on social networks. A hate message quickly goes viral on a social network, with many people sharing and liking it, which unfortunately can have terrible repercussions for the victims.
Cyberbullying and freedom of expression
Hate, harassment and violence are omnipresent in our societies, but those directed at transgender, gay and lesbian (LGBTQ) people are on the increase. They are more visible on social networks, where technology can be used to perpetuate violence based on an existing difference that many find abnormal and even objectionable. These people are more often than not ostracised and persecuted, and it is clear that the situation is even worse on social networks.
Hate, harassment and violent content online are particularly dangerous because of their multiplier effect, which, even if deleted, spreads everywhere and remains in certain archives.
Why is it urgent to put an end to hate speech on social networks based on our differences?
The damage is significant and widespread, and the people who fall victim to it are traumatised for life. Online violence has a global reach and can have unimaginable repercussions (suicides, trauma, rejection).
Conclusion
There is indeed freedom, but it’s up to everyone to know how to use social networks wisely and how to communicate peacefully with others. Avoiding sharing hate messages and videos can help break the chain and prevent the spread of hatred and violence towards others because we don’t share or understand their lifestyle choices. It’s important to be aware of the limits of freedom of expression, otherwise, we risk destroying the lives of those around us with what we consider to be insignificant words.
