WHY YOU SHOULDN’T USE “IN-LAW” IN REFERRING TO YOUR PARTNER’S FAMILY

Introduction

When you marry someone, you are not only committing to spending your life with them, but you are also committing to their family. For some, this can be a joyous and fulfilling experience, but for others, it can be a source of stress and conflict. While the term “in-law” is commonly used to refer to the parents of your spouse, it is not advisable for couples to use it for the following reasons:

Negative Connotations

The term “in-law” can sometimes come across as negative connotations, especially if the person sees their partner’s parents as difficult and unapproachable. Using a more affectionate term, such as “dad” or “mom,” can help create a closer and more positive relationship with one’s partner’s parents.

Affectionate Terms

Using the term “in-law” in referring to one’s partner’s parents can lead to some form of discriminatory treatment between one’s parents and those of one’s spouse. Humans tend to treat people who are closely related to them better than those who are not. Thus, by referring to your partner’s parents as “mom” and “dad” like you also call your parents, you will tend to treat them as your parents and more respectfully too, even if they offend you.

Building Strong Relationships

When one starts seeing their partner’s parents as their parents, they would want to build a strong relationship with them by finding common ground like shared interests or hobbies or taking time to get to know each other better.

Conclusion

While the ultimate decision as to how to refer to one’s partner’s parents is the couple’s decision and their relationship with their parents, what matters most is that couples approach their in-laws with respect, kindness, and an open mind to build positive and loving relationships with their extended family.
