Everyday Choices, Big Impact: A Citizen’s Role in Reducing Plastic Waste

Introduction

The proliferation of plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental challenges facing African countries south of the Sahara. Apart from Rwanda, which is a reference even beyond the continent in the fight against this plastic waste phenomenon, concrete actions on the part of state authorities in other countries still leave something to be desired.

Therefore, while awaiting concrete political will from the ruling class, each citizen can act in their own way to reduce the proliferation of this waste in our environment. And to do this, certain behaviours that seem banal can be useful to us.

Reusing the bag

When you buy something in a store or on the street as usual and you have been given it in a bag, you should keep this bag as long as it can still be reused for other needs. This way you will use one sachet for several needs instead of using one for just one need.

Using the sachet when necessary

So much so that it has become part of our habits, that we ask for a sachet for almost every purchase. However, this is not necessary in certain cases. For example, when you leave your house to go shopping at the local shop, you may go there with something that can hold your purchases. Or when we buy goods with a travelling salesman in our dealership, in principle we should no longer need to take with the latter something to put the purchased product.

Do not throw your plastic waste everywhere

Also, when we happen to use a plastic bag, keep it in your bag, your pocket or elsewhere until we get home or somewhere where it could be picked up by people to be recycled. Plastic bags thrown out in a disorderly manner can be sources of problems for farmers in their fields, for breeders whose animals can swallow them and even in our cities where these bags often obstruct the gutters dug for rainwater drainage. thus causing flooding.

Conclusion

As the first victims of the consequences of the proliferation of waste, citizens must become aware of the danger that the proliferation of this waste represents for survival to act accordingly.
