FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO SUICIDE AMONG STUDENTS

Introduction

Suicide among university students is increasing at a very alarming rate in South Africa. Recently, there have been numerous reports of students who have been found dead as a direct result of committing suicide. Some of these students commit suicide within the university residence setting, while others opt to do it outside of the university premises.

This article discusses suicide among students who lose their coping mechanisms due to various factors, feeling life is no longer worth living.

Factors Contributing to Suicide Among Students

University students are experiencing increasing suicide rates due to various factors including depression, hopelessness, loneliness, lack of funding, academic stress, and pressure from privileged families. The loss of a major breadwinner also raises students’ suicidal thoughts, emphasizing the need for better academic support.

Lack of funding and academic-related stress as causes

University students, especially those from poor families, often face financial hardships and suicidal tendencies due to a lack of financial aid or bursary. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme provides monthly allowances, but students from poor families struggle with hunger, hindering their academic journeys and highlighting the need for improved support and resources.

Unfunded students’ academic performance at the university is negatively impacted by hunger, leading to stress and isolation. This exclusion puts them at risk of being excluded, causing them to overthink and ultimately commit suicide. Addressing this issue is crucial for ensuring academic success.

How the Death of Key Breadwinner Contributes to Suicide Among Students

The death of a key breadwinner at home often leaves financially struggling students hopeless about their future at university. These students rely on relatives for monthly allowances, causing an unbearable psychological wound. As a result, many consider suicide as the best option to be at peace, rather than being a burden to others.

Conclusion

Universities are addressing the rising issue of suicide among students by providing free services from social workers and psychologists. Universities should also encourage students to seek help from these professionals, especially those struggling financially. This will create a caring environment and minimize hunger among students.
